If you read the Lexus website regarding their NAV system, it states the data is at least a year old when it's published.

I just put 10.1 in my Gen 2/3 2003 SC430 system. It was a significant update from the 6.1 that I had in there.

Personally, I think it's usually just not worth the $$$ for one year's worth of updates. But, after 4...I was overdue.

Biggest differences were the rural areas. It wasn't that roads were new...it's that they simply hadn't mapped to that much detail in the more rural areas. 10.1 adds a lot of details by my In-laws and my mom's house (rural Virginia and West Virginia, respectively).

Also, the POI list is much more up-to-date now. Had quite a few times when I went to stop at a gas station on the map only to find that it was no longer there...or no longer a gas station.

Talking SC 430 Nav upgrade.

After all the research. After reading all the post. I have found that the flat screen of the navigation system works real well holding the suction cup of my Garmin. Cost less and works better.

Just don't try to close the navigation door!

...or have the stereo up too loud (aftermarket units don't automatically turn the stereo volume down to give the audible directions like the factory system does).

...or drive through a long tunnel (aftermarket units rely solely on GPS, unlike the factory systems which have accelerometers and digital compasses to know distance and direction when GPS signal is temporarily unavailable)

...or forget to remove it and take it with you when you park (aftermarket systems are THE target for thieves. Portable, easy to grab, easy to resell, practically untraceable. And, while they're relatively inexpensive and simple to replace when they get stolen, the window the thief breaks to get to it...isn't.

I'm not saying that aftermarket navigation systems don't have certain advantages but, the "works better" comment is VERY debatable.

I like the 10. navigation update. I originally had the version that came with my new 2006 (ver5.?). Has a lot more info and it now tells me (on the right side of the screen), the next few turns ahead. It didn't do that before.

I am looking for help. I have a 2006 sc430 with a generation 4 navigation system and a 5.1 disc. In this system I am able to initiate "override". Does anyone know if I can make a 5.1/10.1 hybrid disc and will such a disc still allow me to access the override.
Has anyone actually done this?

The override still works on the v9, so I suspect that it still works on v10 also. No need for a hybrid version.

The override still works on ver. 10.1 of the Gen 2/3 nav systems (2002-2005).

The Gen 4 nav systems in the 2006+ cars lost the ability to override a few years ago.

I know this because my friend's 2006, running 10.1 does NOT have the override anymore...and I have a 2003 running 10.1, and it DOES still have the override.

I was worried about losing the override capability....so freakin' handy sometimes (with the wife in the car) but, after 4 years with the car, my maps were badly outdated.

The Nav system is so much more useful with the new 10.1 updated maps.

I THINK...

With the car stationary...

- Hit the "Info" hard button.

- There should be a "DVD" button in the upper-right side of the screen. Hit that.

Or, you could just go to the DVD player in the trunk, eject the disc and read its label.
