Default "TRAF" button

Can someone please explain how this is supposed to work? I looked in the manual (I know, a first) and it states, press to receive traffic information. When I do, nothing seems to happen. I'm sure it's me, but I just don't know what to expect.

You have to live in an area that broadcasts the information.

Right, and strangely, I don't know where those areas are. I live in an area of 4 million people and nothing happens when I push mine either. So it makes me wonder if it doesn't work around here (Dallas/Ft.Worth), where WOULD it work?

You are using the TRAF as part of a scan search, right? It looks for the RDS (Radio Data Service) information, which is the data the radio station broadcasts along with the music -- e.g. call name, what type of genre it plays, name of song, etc. If a radio station is setup with traffic as its genre, the scan will stop on it. Very few stations are going to have a traffic genre (as opposed to news), so the function has limited use.

So, if you are station that tells RDS you broadcast traffic info, the scan on the TRAF button will stop at that station. The problem I see is that station may not (most likely not) be giving a traffic report when you need it. Not very helpful. I guess I have to either wait for "traffic on the 8's" or get that XM mod into my SC pronto.

Thanks for the info.
