Hey - just a thought - sounds like you have the button (in the glovebox on the left hand side) pushed... I believe it's called valet mode- it cancels the trunk button from opening the trunk & the roof from attempting to open/close.... worth a shot to take a look (Ask me how I know :-)

I have tried pressing that valet button in the glove compartment several times and it did not fix the problem. I think something is wrong with the electrical or a sensor because I have tried just about everything to get it to work.

I just looked in my manual there are two blade fuses in the rear trunk fuse panel. The fuses are numbered 32 [ roof r/h retractable hard top lock system ] 34 roof l/h retractatable hard top lock system

check fuse 17 in passengers side fuse panel
check fuse 36 and 37 [ luggage lock system ] in trunk access door with fuse 32 and fuse 34

I am really curious as to what the fix will wind up being. Let us know.

Buddy

I am not sure if this helps but I had the same problem. Is there and electric eye that scans across where the cover latches into the trunk? I had some empty plastic shopping bags sticking up around the cover and I couldn't get the top to open.I opened the cover and closed it and thought nothing of the bags as they were empty and the top still wouldn't open. Finally I shoved the bags down into the corner of the trunk, not thinking they were the problem but more of just being pissed off and the top opened right up.

Sounds like you misunderstand how that valet button works, it is a toggle switch.

Pressed in, the roof don't open and the trunk lip pop button on the left of the steering wheel don't work.

Popped out, everything works again.

Now go press that button, one time only and leave it popped out, don't push it back in. Then the top will open.

Haha, I do not have bags in my trunk so that can not be it.

And, I understand how the valet switch works. The button is popped out (I even tried popped in to make sure). But, the valet switch seems like the most logical solution. Maybe, there is a loose wire in the switch and it's stuck in valet mode. Idk.

I have an appointment this weekend to get the problem fixed. I will keep you all updated with the solution.

Good, just wanted to make sure you are clear on that.

PM me with your Email and I can send you a copy of the Factory Wiring schematic for the roof and also the instructions on how to open and close the roof manually. This is from the Lexus Service manuals.

The Lexus dealership fixed the problem. The wiring to the valet switch somehow disconnected and the car was stuck in valet mode. The dealership had to remove the glove compartment to fix the wiring. Total Cost: $105 labor. I was quoted 3 to 5 hours of labor so the $105 seems like a bargain.

ntr987, thanks for the update.

I apologize for thinking you didn't know how the valet switch works

But I was half right, it was in valet mode

I was totally wrong, thinking it was in the trunk opener wiring.

Anytime you can leave the Lexus dealership for $105, it's a very good day.

Did you sell your SC430? I think I may have bought it. I am from Indiana and I bought a 2003, black, great condition but now the top won't come down....did you ever get it resolved or am I driving it? Thanks.....

If you just got the car than you might not know that you have to have the trunk vinyl pull cover fully extended and hung in the cradle in order for the top to go down!
