Default Doors Lock Automatically When the trunk is open

Does anyone know why if I open the trunk after about 30 seconds the doors lock. It finally happened, 1000 miles from home, I set the keys in the trunk and closed it. AAA couldn't help, locksmith couldn't help (no lock), nearest Lexus dealer was 100 miles away. I ended up having my wife overnight her key and rented a car for the day.

It's a 2002 and it's always done this. Can this be programmed away?? Anyone have any theories why this is???

Thanks
Mike

I've never had mine (2003) do this. However, if you unlock the doors via the FOB and don't open one of the doors within 30 seconds, the car relocks.

So, is it possible you walked up to the car, hit the unlock button, hit the trunk button, and then took more than 30 seconds futzing around in the trunk before you got around to opening one of the passenger doors?

That's exactly what happened. I used the FOB to unlock the doors and trunk and worked in the trunk for a couple of minutes. Always knew I would screw up some day, but I waited until i was out of town to do it. I thought it had to do with the trunk being open, I can't check until next week (flew out of town), but you're probably right.

it's absolutely the 30 sec delay, and not the trunk. Just happens that the main reason one would take more than 30 secs is if they're doing something in the trunk. For next time, if the locksmith can get you in the car, there's a manual trunk release cable in the bottom of the center console.

Really. The AAA driver had little problem getting into the car using a wedge on the window and a tool to grab the unlock button. How much disassembly to get to the manual trunk release?
Thanks

it's just under the liner near the back. No dissassembly required.

Got back to town and you're all right. The 30 seconds has nothing to do with the trunk, it's just relocks your doors. Not sure why, but OK.

Huge thank you for the tip on the manual trunk release, I found it. It's too bad the Lexus dealer didn't know that. It would have saved me a lot of time and money. I love this forum.

Thanks for the help

I read this post the other day and didn't think anything about it.

But today when approaching my car, I hit the key fob to unlock my trunk. But I hit the door unlock. So I hit the trunk unlock button, I started to load my groceries into the trunk ( I don't know how long it took) but I heard my doors lock.

I pulled the trunk down a little, and yes, my doors were locked and my key fob was sitting on my grocery cart. But the best thing was my top was down (Lol) so no harm no foul.

But at least I'm glad to know that mine will do it.

Onoyme, thanks for raising this question...

Keep in mind, if the top is DOWN and the doors lock, the trunk button inside the car is disabled. Also, if you reach in and unlock the door manually, the alarm will go off.

One of the reasons that you can lock the bottom part of the center console is because the manual trunk-release is in there.

If you have the center console locked and the top is down...and you lock your keys in the trunk, you're still screwed.
