Climate control: "OFF doesn't mean OFF"

Is it just me or is there a small air flow, AT THE LAST TEMPERATURE SET, even when the climate control is supposed to be OFF?

This becomes an issue for me in the Fall. I like to have the top down as much as possible, and that includes turning max heat (85 degrees) and high fan with the top down in the Fall (like now).

If I have to put the top back up, I turn the climate control off, but max temperature heat still comes out, albeit with a very small air flow. This is true even the next day, so it is not just that the heater coils are still hot or something.

Is there a way to get OFF to mean OFF -- no air flow, no temperature?

push the air circulation button it will stop outside air coming in.

JohnnyCake,

I too have experienced this. Was really surprised when a thread about it showed up here recently (I've been searching every combination of words I can think of for the past 3 hours straight and I CAN'T FIND IT!).

I have found several threads that discuss this...and have yet to have anyone post a solution.

The problem seems to present itself when the car is brought up to operating temperature, then shut off, then restarted. After the second start is when things seem to get warm in the footwells.

I've never had the problem during a start-from-cold and drive off. I've never had the problem with the top up.

Here are the threads I've found on the topic...the one that was posted earlier this year talked about it and had links to these threads and (I think) a few others.

If someone has one, I would LOVE a solution to this.

JohnnyCake,

I don't know if I found something or not. Was at my dealership getting a C-BEST setting changed (they screwed it up and had to fix it...but, that's a different thread) so, I found myself going through the entire list of C-BEST settings for my 2003. Guess what I found?

In section 11 - Air Conditioner

"FOOT AOUT OPER (Foot AirOut Operation) Default ON - Function to turn the air flow from floor vents ON automatically when the retractable hardtop or soft top is housed"

I don't know it for sure, but that really sounds like what we're talking about! Unfortunately, there's snow on the ground so I'm not gonna drive around for an hour with the top down to test my theory. Ask me in April if this fixes it!

I had my dealer change my setting from the default to OFF. We'll see what happens.

I have been one of the folks complaining about this "problem" for a while (including my previous incarnation as "Advancer"). I've been to the dealer a couple of times and they think I am nuts, as do a few folks on this Board. Please be sure to post the results of this computer change.:)

I guess this is for Habious. Did you fix fix it?

Habious Jun 8, 2008 02:25 PM

I would say it's better but, it's still not perfect. I still sometimes feel heat at my feet when the top is down and the climate control is off. But, I think it's noticeably better with the C-BEST setting changed.

I wouldn't recommend taking the car in to get this C-BEST setting changed just for this but, if you've already got the car at the dealership for something else, why not?

When I do feel it, I take manual control of the climate control. I set the vent to "feet", set the temp to like 73-74, and put the fan on like 2 notches of "fan-ness". With that setup, my feet don't get hot but, I also don't have air noticeably blowing on me.

Still would be nice to get Lexus to admit that this is an issue or problem. Even if they just come out and say "Yeah, it's a problem we know about...sorry about that"

Thanks, Habious for the reply. This warm air think has been an annoyance for me. It really can ruin a nice ride with the top down. I'll try your setting change.

Habious: I contacted my Lexus dealer, and looked at the C-Best settings for the SC430 on the Lexus website. They, and I, can't find this setting you mention. Where did you find it? Section 11 of the document on the website is not about the Air Conditioner. Setting 13 is about air conditioning. But it has to do with making the fresh air/recirculating air manual instead of automatic when the Climate control syste is on. This doesn't sound like the setting you mentioned. Is the C-Best (Lexus Personalized Settings) document on the Lexus website only for 2008 vehicles? Are there different settings for an older SC? I too have a 2003.

Thanks

MDames2,

Yes, they're different for the new ones. Here's a thread that has the CBEST sheets for the 2002...which is the same for ours (2003). Look on page 7 of 8, 12th item down (2nd from the bottom).

Habious: Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate it. It is annoying to have that hot air blowing on you with the top down on a warm day.

HeavyFoot Jun 9, 2008 08:50 PM

WOW. I'm very surprised that other people are experiencing the same problem as me. I thought I was going nuts. I mention this to a dealer several years ago they thought I was making an excuse to return the vehicle. No one believed me.
Anyway I overcome this issue by setting the temp as same as outside temp and it seems to stop from blowing hot air.
