Retroplay schooled us on the two different buses in our cars some time ago! It’s why we always need to reset the VSC on the 2002-2005. Because our scanners look for a CAN bus first, which triggers a fault.
I found this today...

Please let me chime in with a thank you to hsujohn as after my PPI (which included reading codes) my SC also experienced a “phantom code,” resulting in the VSC lights being illuminated... I did the jump wire trick as described in this chain, and it reset. All good! Thanks again for this forum. It’s terrific.

2002-2005 have a BEAN Bus

2006-2010 have a CAN Bus

when we use a code reader. It looks for a CAN Bus first and that is when we receive the VSC faults.

Here is the thread Retro made to explain our cars.

Here's a link to instructions to build an adapter that will prevent the VSC error that occurs when using a Techstream on the 2005 and older SC430s without the CAN bus. See post # 62.

Default The vsc reset worked!

This Forum is so fantastic, so many knowledgeable drivers here.
I was skeptical about using a paperclip to reset my VSC sensor but i braved up and did it.
Wow it worked perfectly. No more warning lights on my console.
I absolutely love my 2005 SC430. Thanks for all your help guys and gals

So this happened to me on my sons 2005 SC last week when I hooked up my Techstream laptop to turn the DRL's off and reset the key fob lock and trunk delay options. Now his VSC and VSC Off lights are on. I am back in AR. I told him to take it the dealership to get them turned off and send me the bill

I too had the VSC, VSC off, and engine light all come on while driving. Local non-dealer Lexus specialist put on scan tool and showed no codes. Reset vehicle and lights remained off for 3 days. Came on again today. Thoughts?

Happens all the time, hence we all have developed a tool to reset these. Handy tool.

Thank you. Wasn't sure if there was a deeper issue with it recurring so soon.

If you get the VSC lights alone, that is a simple "Paperclip" reset procedure.

HOWEVER, if you get the VSC AND the Check Engine light, then you have an actual problem.

The check engine light comes on in most cars, but the SC turns on all three so you are more likely to notice them.

If your mechanic did not see any codes, it probably means it is a Lexus/Toyota specific code.

Default Thanks!

Just a quick message to express my thanks to whomever figured this out. I had an oxygen sensor replaced and shortly thereafter the VSC on off light came on. I carefully followed the instructions here using a paperclip and fixed it. I've learned so much from these forums and I appreciate it very much.

This works like a champ. When I was in VA in May I had plug in my Techstream cable for my 06 SC to my Son's 05 SC and tripped the VSC lights. Just walked the son through the jumper issue and the lights are now off. Thanks for the great info.

Default +1 for the paper clip!!

Thank you! You guys should be regarded as a Natural treasure. I had a 3-button remote programmed to my sc today. As i left the VSC and VSC off light came and stayed on. WTF?The 'tech' stated that he's done hundreds of these cars(initially when we met he said he THINKS he might have done one of these before) and so it must have been something I did or it was already on before he got there. Really? ARGHH!!. I knew he didn't know too much about codes and so, having techstream at home, I just decided that i would be able to figure it out on my own. Well, this paperclip method was much easier.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
