If you use only soda cans for your traveling beverages, the cup holders work just fine. Pretty much, this is all I use the cup holders for, especially when traveling.
And I'm sure I don't have to mention that the cans will travel a lot further when tossed out the side window than some styrofoam cup or even a plastic bottle. This helps keep the roadway clean. And think green: separate your paper and plastic before throwing it out of the car.
