hahaha, like i said, it's all about what you want and how hard you work towards it. if it's something you truly like and want, i am sure you will find a way

"Cool Cars" but the SC430 tops the list. My wife (68)
saw it on the internet and talked me into selling
my 99' Corvette Convertible. for a downpayment.
We had to get a loan for 15,000 2 years ago and
just paid it off last month. A 2002 free and clear
Should we trade up to a 2006? I think I can wait
till an 06' is a couple of years old then mabee we can
do it again for 15,000.

Someone famous (can't rember who) once said,

That fits our life.

Thanks for the respect ES3. Here's how

Sold my 99' Vette for 31,250.00. 15,000.00 loan 3,030.00 from saving.
Paid 49,280. 00 for 2002 SC 430.

How did i pay for the Vette?
Sold my car 82' Rivera Convertible (had it 19 years) 4,700.00
Sold wife's 89' Reata (had it 13 years) 3,500.00. 10,000.00 loan.19,300.00 savings
I had been saving for a Vette since 1994.
Paid 37,500.00 for the Vette.

Look to the future life just gets better, oh those
aches and pains I had thoes in my 20s too.

No old guys in this forum? My avatar is a pic of me during WWII (I had three different uniforms plus a bombardier's hat and a helmet ... well, helmet liner). But even at my advanced age, I still can turn the ladies' heads .. except now they turn the other way.

Salaries have gone through the roof over the past few years, so I can understand how younger professionals can afford a 65K+ car. I had several investments including a couple of IRAs when I took an early retirement in '93. One IRA was about 70K and that's what's paying for the 2002 SC430 I purchased in July of 2001. Didn't notice the money going into the IRA and don't notice it coming out.

well when the car first came out, the waiting list was unbelievably long. so paying extremely high premium for the car was totally expected

actually even now, i think the price of the car still stays pretty strong

We bought certified pre-owned. The car was 18 months old
and had 33k miles on it ( a high mileage car then) now it has
48k miles just a little les than average for about 4 Years
We have had it 26 months and put 15K miles on it.
Hope that explains the price.

Joe Peters ...

I guess so. If they promise to be nice to us old folks, we'll have to promise to repress our curmudgeonly ways. Maybe the other old f*rts with SCs just don't bother with forums.

2002 pricing ...
I got on the SC waiting list on 3/5/2001 with a deposit of $1,000 and picked up my SC in July. Although the base price was $58,455, there was an additional $3,456 in "options" and delivery/handling which brought the actual sticker to $61,911. Of course, New York State wanted its cut of the transaction and there was a luxury tax on top of that which brought the final price to a few pennies shy of $68,000.

Members who ask how the younger guys in this forum could afford such an expensive car should look back to their first new car and calculate how many hours they had to work to buy it. My first new car was a '64 Volvo P1800S that cost $4,000 when I was making $125 a week as a computer programmer. Using the same number of work hours applied to the price of a SC430, the purchaser would be making about $2,000 a week; chump change for a professional nowadays.

My Mom (who owns the SC) is 55. I am 26 and I can see why a lot of people are suprised that younger people own SC's. Having an $800-900 payment with $10k down or laying down $20-40k cash on a car is something that probably 90% (being conservative) of people would never even dream of.

I could afford my Mom's SC, but for some reason an $862 a month payment seems kind of scary to me. But of course I have $50k into my Supra over 6 years so I guess it's not that hard.
