I came across a review of the z8 on you tube. In 2001 the msrp was 125k. The sc430 was 60 k. The bmw had a soft top vs the superior hard top of the Lexus. Why was the bmw so expensive when new.

German cars notoriously known for high price. Nothing new.
Uhh they didn't make any. It wasn't a Toyota backed production car. From wikipedia.
"A total of 5,703 Z8s were built: 3,160 for the world market and 2,543 for the North American market"
Toyota will use the same manufacturing facilities/technology to make 100,000 camrys to make 10,000 SC430's as well. Or at least they did back in the day. SC build ### are in the 30,000? Something like 6x the Z8 numbers.

the z3 and z4 while higher volume sales plummet in value 20 years later. The z8 is worth over 200k today. I don’t know what they bottomed out at but it was a good deal in hindsight. The z8 looks good but nothing out of the ordinary to make me pay 125k in 2002 money. The NSX looks way better than the z8 and was cheaper in 2002; 90k msrp. I guess it’s more proof how hard it is to really predict what cars will become collectibles in the future.
