Default Replacing package shelf ?

So my little "package shelf", I think that's the correct term, has a little slit in it on the drivers side, I saw a couple like this when I was car shopping, not sure why it happens. Anyway, I tracked one down on epray and it's supposed to be here today. Anyone replaced theirs? Anything to it? Just the little cover I think and I'm hoping it just screws on and off. I'll see later, if there are any trick to doing so let me know please.

Well I started working on this although I could find NOTHING on how to do it on line, so a bit of trial and error. Here is the part that I am talking about. You can see right behind the driver's headrest there is a bubble in the material there, I am not sure what causes this, but I saw it on a couple of the cars we looked at and I want it fixed.

So I ordered one off of ebay and got it this morning, excellent condition and even came with all the hardware, a little love from a bottle of Protect All and is like new!

Now trying to figure out how to get to all the fasteners on this, had to stop the top in a partway position, remove a "felt skirt" thing that protects the finish back there. Unfortunately lost a screw in the process, but found it a bit later without incident, yay!

I could not get to all the hardware to take it off so I went in a surfed the internet again and found nothing EXCEPT a video showing the whole package shelf working as the top went up and down. I did not realize so much was happening back there! The top and bottom slide apart and the little wings on the end swivel out to the outside! So I just need to find the sweet spot where it's all open enough to access the hardware to remove it. For today I put it all back together and I will attempt a second try tomorrow. Also received my tube of silicone grease today so while I'm playing tomorrow I can lube all the mechanics of the top mechanism.

Stay tuned... I'll be back!

Common problem. Plenty of talk about this. Use a bobby pin poke a little hole and bleed the air out.

No, the material has a slit or split in it, that will not work. And that is the same as the others i saw, same slit in the material in the same place.. You can see it in the pic below.

OK, day two...
I had to play with the opener button to get the package shelf to stop in the correct position, parts all splayed out and the outer "wings" out.

Two of the bolts were still a pain to access as the parts did not splay apart enough to quite reach them, used a small 10mm combo wrench to get in there but was completely blind and did it by feel alone, a mirror might have been handy but I did not have one close by to use. So here it is off, which also allowed me to access a couple other pivots to lubricate and more weather strip to clean/treat.

And here is a comparison of the damaged unit and its replacement.

A little blue thread lock so everything stays put.

And maybe this will help someone else if they decide to do this. I sure could find no reference anywhere that showed how to do it! Seems weird that this part is damaged in the exact same spot on multiple cars.
