Fuel door releases but won't spring open

Fuel door releases but won't spring open
When I push the button, I hear the release click, but the fuel door won't spring open. I tied a little loop of string and I can easily pull the door open as I push the button. Is there some kind of spring that needs to be replaced? 2002 SC430
