rcjsidyrf=sounds bad!
2002 SC 83K mi., with a noisy exhaust. Sounds like a air cooled-a bit of metallic rasp when you drive slow by a wall or barrier. It seems a bit louder in pass. comparrks sometimes"....does it temnt whhen throttle is pressed, except maybe less so on hwy.
Just heard an Audi with "aftermarket pipes and resonators"...if some part of my system is bad, what do most people replace w. if not Lexus (it did have a engine light on 2 yrs back, with shop clearing light by something called a 'lambda sensor mod'. Does anyone understand what that is, and they made it sound like "sometimes it works, sometimes it don't (i.e tried to avoid my ha ing to replace catalysts.
Haven't got an app't anywhere yet, so if anyone can guess, pls. give a shout.

Thank you for replying-I would normally ask you see my newer post, which has a lot of b.s from a "custom exhaust" shop, etc. I have 2 other shops to go to in the next 2 weeks, but the big question for me is-how do I get that "catalyst error" off re. avoid replacing those suckers, which aftermarket I am told won't even fix...no one wants to touch this, saying:

Default Exhausted to dump the 2002 SC?I've been to 3 shops (pep boys/a 'performance Euro' repair shop and some dumb outfit called 'Lou's Custom Exhaust' (small chain in MA).
The last one gave me the crow eyes like in Stephen King movie soon as I drove in, telling me "oh it's a 21 year old car get something else...it needs (according to his 30 sec viewing..'flanges, leaks from catylsts, etc...to say nothing of the other two shops t3elling me it was cat back (my complaint was it sounds like buzzy crap, a bit louder etc...I didn't see the check engine light which is for catalyst).
There's two other app'ts with other exhaust places, but I kinda wonder if anyone's even on this list w. such an old car for a query:
-Can that check engine/actalyst light be triggered by "just" a need for a cat bqck system.
-They did point out rust points in the "flanges" for the clamps and stuff..yeah, we get rust in NE/NY/PA.
Right now the only other thing I know rusted out is the rear campter adjustment, whioh folks have told me to ignore.
IN MA, APPARENTLY, I COULD GET THE WORK DONE FOR ABOUT 2 GRAND, AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COULD BE ON AFTERWARDS (THEY CLAIMED "MAGNAFLOW' WON'T TURN IT OFF, EVEN IF I BOUGHT THEIR CATALYST(S)
I LOVE THE CAR, but perhaps its time for an IS convertible? I would rather get a e-car but the noly out there now with top down is either a gas pig Bronco or Sad Sack Jeeps. Yeah, I've owned Miata MX5's and Mustangs, but I'll prob. be dead before any of these cars come out for less than 70 grand in plug in (no, the Corvette E is $115K!).
Anyhone know of a salvage repair LS500? HAH!
Seriously, if the SC is worth only $8000 on trade (and far less if that light is on), where would you draw the line, dollar wise on repairing exhaust components?
P.S Is Magnoaflow really 48 state junk that won't turn off my check engine light-the last tech was inisiting it would never be able to do so!!!
p.p.s I don't see how I could get this fixed with 'junk yard parts' unless somehow a shop could find and install them all!Last edited by Buggeroff6; Yesterday at 11:15 PM.

I saw that post after you mentioned it. But I come from a position of I LOVE my car and do the required maintenance what ever it may be because my car deserves it! LOL. I don't see anything about the cars mileage or if the CAT's were destroyed by an oil leak etc. So, I must admit, living in Cali, I would have to put in OEM CAT's that would cost an arm and a leg each, but since they are good for at least 100K miles, to me it is just maintenence. I would say, spend the money, fix it right and then get your money back if you sell it with NO check engine light. For a car that is a special as the SC was/is to Lexus, I expect it will still maintain a certain value for quite some time to come. "IF" it is properly maintained. Fix it, keep it. Or sell it for $2,800 less and be up front with the buyer and let them fix it. As far as the IS? I have looked at it. It's a hard top like the SC. But I don't believe it looks a nice. Plus it doesn't have the 4.3L V8. But to each his own. Good luck in whatever you decie.
