Unhappy High fuel consumption!!!

Hi all,

I noticed that my car is consuming a lot of fuel lately; Full tank can drive me only 240 miles.

The average consumptions start as follows:-
These readings are when I am driving below 65M/H and slowly accelerating

After start and for less than 2 minutes 30.6 MPG

Then it drops dramatically to 12.5 MPG

Then it stays on either 7.3 or 7.0 MPG

These readings are when I am driving up to 140M/H and accelerating very fast.

After start and for less than 2 minutes 30.6 MPG

Then it drops dramatically to 9.5 MPG

Then it stays on 7.0 MPG

Is that normal? If not, then what could be the reason for it and what is the normal situation?

Thanks

No, I don't see how it could possibly be normal. I've never seen numbers even close to this on my car.

Oh my, those are terrible numbers!

Wait until you see what mines look like...I'll post a pic tomorrow...

But I think I've indentified your problem. Would it have something to do you with your ClubLexus handle?

As a person who has taken his car to only 85mph since ownership, perhaps my comments won't be germane. I avg about 21mpg between city and highway driving. I never can recall figures like your pics demonstrate. There must be something wrong with the computer that's generating your fuel consumption. Have you taken it to the dealer??

The forum you're posting this on is "ClubLexus". Your "handle" is the username you registered here with (Turboo). So he was asking you if you have a turbo in your SC430.

Doesn't look right to me as well. Have you checked using the old fashion way of resetting the trip between fill-ups and doing the math? I get an average of 22-23 with a mix of country, highway and city driving. I put about 20k a year on my 06 daily driver.

YMMV()

First of all, very aggressive driving, at high speed, like you're doing, will definitely give you poor mileage. Adding in the fact that it's +100 degrees with the AC on will only compound this. Also, your computer isn't extremely accurate and may be less accurate if it hasn't been reset so it can start averaging from zero again. Finally, I would replace your fuel filter and clean out your MAF sensor as well, which can contribute to poor mileage results.

I too have noticed that the mpg computer is rarely accurate. Unfortunately for your case, it is usually high. I monitor the display and then calculate the mpg when I fill up and usually the computer is up to 1 mpg high. I then reset the figure as intdiamond suggests above. Right at the start of the new calculations (right after reseting the average), the numbers can change fairly easily and quickly, depending on my driving. After about 70 to 100 miles though, it settles down to being fairly consistent.

I typically average about 20 to 21 mpg in my mixed city / country driving. (My '02 is a daily driver also. I average about 15 or 16kmi per year.)

I say because you are doing mostly city driving stop and go. Also your A/C is constantly on because of the hot weather will dramatically drop.

it looks like you're resetting it before taking the reading. if it is reset to zero and you are coasting, it'll say you're getting 30-40 mpg. if you reset it and stomp on it, it'll tell you that you're getting more like 7 mpg. what's your average over a few days? for moderately aggressive driving, i'd say it should be around 15 mpg. if you stomp on it at every light, probably more like 12. personally, i average around 18.

edit: you said you get 240 miles on a tank of gas. i fill up when the light comes on. which is about 16 gallons. if you do the math, that would mean you're getting 15 mpg. which sounds about right.

Take an average using the trip odometer set at zero and put a full tank in it. Thats going to be the most accurate way. All my toyota/lexus cars trip computers were showing about 2-3 MPG more than what I got doing the the manual calc.

Check out my Range Approx on a full tank...keep in mind there is ~4 gallon reserve when the number hits zero, so if I ran my car out completely dry...I'd hit...550 miles? As an unofficial challenge, can anyone here beat my number?
