1996 SC400 Questions
I have always been looking for an SC-400 and found a customer of mine who has one for sale.
He has every service record since the bought the car in 96 and it only has 90k on the odometer.
I am going to look at it tonight and hopefully he replaced the timing chain.
Is there anything else I should be looking at or be concerned about?
He is asking $6500 so I feel that is a fair price.
How difficult will it be to find parts for it?
I was in the same situation 2 years ago and bought a 1993 Acura Legend with all the service records.
Little things started to go wrong and I was forced to buy parts on ebay and it was a pain in the butt.
I can work on stuff but I am not my knowledge is limited for sure and I have a family so I am not able to wrench on it all night or on a saturday.
Should I leave this car to someone who wrench or should I pick it up?

$6500 for that mileage and assuming pretty great condition is a fair price for what you're describing.
As far as items to keep an eye out for:
Power steering system. All parts of the power steering system are known to leak on basically every SC. Check the pump, pressure hoses (there are two), and the rack. These are each about 300-500 just in parts. I was able to replace my lines and rack in 1 day by myself in my garage.
Also take a look at the front lower control arm ball joints. These are also a common problem on these and the ball joints are non replaceable meaning you will have to purchase new arms for these. OEM replacements are around $400-600 a side if you can find some deals on them, while high quality aftermarket arms which offer replaceable ball joints are going to run you $700-1000+ for the pair.
Besides those two things the 1UZ-FE is overall a very reliable motor, in fact I'd argue it is THE most reliable gas engine ever made. That being said, all of these cars are at least 22 years old, you will encounter random things that can go wrong. Plastics get brittle, bushings get worn, and electronic motors go bad. Lexus vehicles from the 90's have a pretty good reputation for their electronics but just make sure to touch and test out every button you find. A lot of the interior electronics are usually okay but a lot of people on groups mention bad power window motors, bad gears for the electronic steering column adjustment, and burnt out gauge cluster lights. Another common issue for these is the ECU going bad. If it goes bad you will know, if not then just get a second opinion. They are repairable but it will have the car down for a bit, the labor is as easy as unplugging and plugging it back in.
If the car is all original and in good condition then I would definitely buy it if its something you've been wanting for a while. Every day these cars are getting harder and harder to find with low miles.
Best of luck and hope you find what you're looking for.

Magicpants said it about perfectly! Most parts are still available for these cars (minus a few oddball things) and they're relatively easy to work on. I'm in CO - if you don't go pick that thing up tonight let me know and I just might
