Mine was the same way (before it stopped working). Presumably a convenience feature, so you can easily find the eject button at night. (Tying it into the cabin light sensor for the headlights would have been wicked cool.) After all, the car usually isn't running when you go to change out the CDs in the magazine.
Yes, like everyone has mentioned, the eject light is always "On" whether or not car is running, So you can change / eject the CD cartridge carrier when car is off or ignition key is not on.
You press eject the button, you'll hear the cartridge shifting ejection all CDs into carrier after it stops, (* if you don't the CDs get stuck or scratch) you can then slide the cover to remove carrier.
I'm assuming thats what you're wondering the whole purpose of eject button.
My changer was working up until recently. The mech stopped reading CDs. RIP (it had a good run)
Normally the light is on 24/7, whether the car is on or off. I never tried to eject the discs when the car was off tho. What I would do is with the car on but radio off, I would press the eject button. It starts flashing, and you can hear the CD disc getting loaded back into the 12disc cartridge. After that you hear the mechanism raising the cartridge (it's like a little elevator). When it stops blinking, you can slide the cover open and lift out the magazine. If you open the cover and the magazine is 3inches down in the machine, it is still loaded, and you need to close the cover and press eject. If you hear nothing, then it is either jammed or the motor that lifts the cartridges is dead.
