Sc400 issues!!!
Im not sure how to interpret my scan tool data. I’m getting a p0171 code. My short term fuel trim seems to be ok, but my long term is around 30, which seems really high. Also, my o2 sensors seem a little strange. Ok bank 1 the down stream reads rich even though the upstream reads a little lean at times. Does this sound like a vacuum leak or a bad sensor? My maf numbers are within spec ~3.5-5 at idle
That code can often times be a bad MAF. I believe on your '97 that's a hot wire MAF which are cleanable (never try to clean the vortex style units). May be worth trying a quick clean or finding another used MAF to swap out with. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
^ yes the "jet engine" looking MAF is hotwire. You can clean those with CRC Mass Airflow cleaner.
If your oxygen sensors are original, you are overdue to replace them. Years ago the dealer recommended replacing O2 sensors every 100k miles but since the creation of OBD2 they don't recommend it anymore. However, changing old O2s will result in improved performance across the board.
You don't need to change rear O2s unless they throw codes. And even then there are ways to defeat some codes if your cats go bad...
Primary O2s (control idle and driveability) : Bank 1 Sensor 1, Bank 2 Sensor 1
Secondary O2s (measure whether the cats are working) : Bank 1 Sensor 2, Bank 2 Sensor 2
