Default 1996 sc400 17inch wheels

Hey everyone. I’d like to go with 17 inch instead of the stock 16”. I know many of you run coilovers but I’d like to stay stock on the suspension. What’s everyone opinion on will this size still look good ? Or will it look weird and too high ?

IMO, 16" looks a bit small and 19" looks a bit big on these cars. 17" or 18" is perfect. I run 17" at stock height, and I've also had 17" slightly lowered. Good aesthetics and plenty of sidewall for comfort. It's the only diameter wheel I would go with. Plenty of tire choices at that size, too.

Personally I feel the best 16" rim is the 1996-2000 7-spoke OEM "blade" style SC/Soarer rim. You can't run large brake calipers with them but they look amazing with the factory sidewall sizing.

Now aside form that I recommend 17". 18" is a good size as well. I don't see much benefit to using 19" or larger diameter rims.

18" is usually needed to accommodate large aftermarket multi-piston brake caliper options from other cars. That is the only reason I would run that size on an SC if 17" friendly LS400 or Supra TT calipers were not enough stopping force for the setup.

More important to me than large diameter rims is the rim width and with it the ability to run very wide rear tires in a staggered setup. I think 17x8 square or 18x8 square can be fine but I think something like 17x8 or 18x8 in the front and 17x9.5-10 or 18x10-10.5 in the rear is better.

Ride height on my car with an oler Gixxer_Drew Bilstein-Hypercoil coilover is pretty close to stock but I may be 1"-1.5" lower than actual stock for an SC. I'd have to measure to get an exact number but my car doesn't look lowered. It looks as if it has wide stock 17" rims with some factory sport package suspension. This is mostly due to the Gixxer_Drew suspension's limitations with geometry when going much lower than 2" below stock ride height.

And it also looks stealth and unassuming to most people and additionally allows for good suspension travel when going over less than ideal road surfaces. I've driven my SC cross country a couple of times and having some semi-normal suspension travel is a bonus when the roads might be fantastic in one state highway and totally awful in another.
