99 SC400 price

I already addressed the limited production vs limited color: "One is limited because of color (which only appeals to people who know about that sort of thing), while the other is a totally different market." The average person buys a color they like, not one that's limited. And guess what, limited colors are usually that because they were less popular. Sometimes that makes them more valuable later on (supply and demand), like Sunburst Yellow Miatas, but basically it's just a less common color in the eyes of everyone but the owner.
For what it's worth, I paid $1000.00 for a 2000 SC300 and the only reason i own it is because of that cheap price tag. If it wasn't that cheap, i wouldn't have even considered it. These cars are not only few and far between but they've been forgotten by most.
Personally, 8-15k is so far out in left field. I wouldn't even entertain that price unless it had the following:
1) Decent coilovers
2) R154 or T56 swap
3) Staggered forged wheels
4) Supra rear differential
5) Pristine body work
6) 2jzGTE w/ a single turbo.

If it's really in excellent condition, I would say $10-12k. But as much as I am "chickening out" here, it's really worth what someone is willing to pay. If someone really wants a SC400 with the VVTI V8 and 5 speed automatic transmission and want something in top condition, they'll pay more. I really like the SC400, but there have been so many improvements made to modern cars over the past 20 years that I would rather put that money towards something else. A manual transmission to me is worth a premium because there aren't many cars that have that as an option now.
Definitely agree with you when it comes to the general public. I just pointed those particular things out because they're important to me when it comes to the SC300. I'll be doing the same on my car, in due time. Do i plan on selling mine? I don't think so because i'd never be able to replicate the car for how much I got it for. I've owned my 4Runner for 10-12 years now and it could use another Toyota (i've always had Mustangs parked next to her) in the garage.
There is a white 98 SC400 with higher miles in good shape for $6,000 just south of Oklahoma City. I found that one on the Oklahoma City section of Facebook Marketplace. I considered getting it since it looked so nice online.
I am a sometime buyer and seller. Within the last month a 1992, red, 50k mile, no squawk SC400 spent a week at eBay and did not get a single bid. Presentation of the car was excellent. Having watched SC400 sales for a while I conclude, a) few are for sale anywhere, b) most that are have (too) high miles, c) they tend to be well kept, d) little concern for model year, and e) price is most influenced by color and mileage. Seller attitude can make or break the deal. Avoid broker/dealers if you can.
I would say $10Kish is about right for a flawless 98+ SC400. This would be a car that literally needs nothing. All maintenance is up to date, tires are at 8/32 minimum, headlights look like the glass high beam lens in terms of clarity and color, leather has minor creases but no cracks, lower control arms have been done with OEM parts, next T belt and water pump service is still 3+ years away, etc. The buyer of this type of car will be someone older (40+) who does not have the desire or time to "fix it up". He will want something that is completely stock and will consider a car with even $50K in upgraded parts to be butchered.
I never thought I would become one of those "older people" and have that mentality but since I hit the 40+ group I discovered the paradox of how you can afford to buy quality tools/equipment to do projects and repairs but you do not have the time and even if you do the wear and tear on your body does not allow you to do everything you could in your younger days without bad consequences. I would like to buy a 99 or 00 SC400 at some point and would gladly pay a premium to get something that is nice to begin with. Even at $15K for an absolutely perfect SC400 with the upgraded UZ engine it is a steal. That much does not buy much when it comes to newer cars.

(sorry post title should say ‘99 not ‘99 tried to edit but not sure it corrected)
please weigh in - what does this experienced group feel 98 SC400 from verified 3rd owner, with 96k miles worth? (appears to be 9.5 out of 10 int/Ext and mechanically - close to perfection condition) - driven only 14,000 mi in past 10 yrs and babied by car collector type owner w multiple vehicles garaged
dont chicken out and say it’s worth “whatever someone is willing to pay” etc - step you’re to the plate and put a real $ number at least a right range as your experience and expertise allows.
thx!

I searched for 1 year and bought a clapped out 99 for restoration. By the time I calculated all the costs it was at almost 15k. Change of plans, kept searching and found another on the L showroom floor with 92k miles. Bought the car online. Final price 11k delivered. Weighing the options I got a mechanically sound car with no guess work. Worth every penny💰
appreciate you updating us...agree w you that it has to go lower than $14k unless a “must have” buyer comes along - still too high at $14k, even though in excellent condition w only 95k mi.s - is now a 22 (soon to be 23) year old vehicle
thx Kira I saw that as well but didn’t post the update

I think if it were $10,000 it probably would have sold.
Not seeing the car , hard to tell BUT if it is really clean and less than 100k miles , in my opinion , best place to sell an SC now is the auction site Bring A Trailer (BaT) . If you check the past sold SCs there , the clean ones had been fetching quite good on that site in the past year or so. He can put a reserve price if he doesn't want it lower than a certain price. It won't cost him much to list it there too.
As some of you have said , $10-15k might seem high since you can buy a lot newer and better vehicle. But there would always be those who wanted a clean and low mileage SC especially those in that category are getting harder to find. I am amazed though at how many are putting high dollar bids on them at BaT . And those people bidding there can't play around cause your card is automatically charged for a percentage of your bid and so if you back out , you loose money so people there mean it when they bid.
