End of my Search
After a lot of hunting, I finally settled on a 1992 5-speed SC300.
The transport truck brought it to me today.
To say the least, I am thrilled.
It is completely original, with 82k miles. The paint is all original and everything works. It came with a lot of history. The first owner, a lady, had this car for 24 years.
Except for the usual driver seat wear, the interior is completely pristine. The exterior has a few very insignificant rock chips, but the car has never had any paint work whatsoever.
Even the steering wheel has absolutely no wear. It appears as new. The spare tire and the jack and tools have never been touched.
I found this car in a Craigslist ad. Interestingly, the ad for this car never showed up in any of the search engines that supposedly search all the Craigslists nationwide.
I got in the habit of checking the individual Craigslists postings in all the major western and southern cities every night and I finally ran across this car.
The car drives and handles just like the 1992 5-speed SC300 that I bought new back in 1992. It is like a time capsule.
I plan to treat my newly acquired SC300 like a collector car.
All of the wheels are in showroom condition. The window garnishes on both doors are perfect with no breaks.
Shift boot and Parking brake boots are like new.
Trunk looks like it did the day it left the factory.

I'm going to keep it bone stock original. Forgot to mention that I also received the original window sticker along with all the repair receipts. Original sticker price was $37,120.

Beautiful find, mercuryman! Congratulations! It's in great shape inside and out and the shade of green is nice factory color! I see only very, very minor cosmetic restoration being needed. Mostly to those seat back nets. Someone once listed or sold the correct type and color elastic string (aftermarket) that restores the to tautness. That may still be possible to find.

It it is a really beautiful example. Having bought it before seeing it in person, it is one of those happy deals where the car is even better than its pictures.
I still can't believe things like the completely immaculate steering wheel. I have to believe that the long time lady owner must have worn gloves every time she drove this car.

I have soft skin, which is a curse when working on cars or doing anything more strenuous than breathing. I brush up against a cotton ball and I bleed... On the flip side, I could get 50 years out of a leather steering wheel and it would still look brand new. Gloves would actually be far more abrasive. I always wonder if people have sandpaper grafted to their hands when I see the condition of most steering wheels and shift *****.

My wife always wears thin soft white cotton gloves when driving in order to protect her hands, so the leather steering wheel on her Mercury Grand Marquis is also immaculate. However, her car is only nine years old, so I find the twenty-five year old completely flawless unrestored leather steering wheel on this SC300 to be quite amazing. But then the whole interior of this SC300 is amazing.
