Default $3,000 USD to swap a motor!?!? In TX??

So I'm messing around with plans and ideas working on different things and there is a shop here in San Antonio, TX that said, and I quote, "Well it would be starting around 3 for the swap" I say "300?" He says "No, starting at 3,000." I did not want to be rude but I said "OMG wow, never mind, thank you, bye."

Is this a reasonable price? It does NOT seem like a reasonable price lol

I've googled but nothing concrete.

That sounds astronomical, unless they're including the cost of the engine? I was quoted $1400 by one place here, and even that was on the high side according to a few people I talked to.

Exactly! There is no way he misunderstood me. I clearly said, "I have a 2jzgte motor with wiring harness and ecu, how much would you charge to swap it into a 1997 lexus sc300..." and then so on.

I was expecting 500-1000 MAX.

edit: I just called back to double check. He now dropped it to "right around the 2k mark." He says the reason it is so much is because they have to do modifications to the exhaust and the harness which I suppose takes a long time. But still...2k. Sheesh. I'd rather have a wrenching party with people who like beer and food.

It takes quite a long time to do it....you got to figure the rate is prob anywhere from 80-100 an hr.....

I would never attempt to do the swap unless you are going to do it yourself......it costs way to much money for someone else to do it....'

Its not really that hard....there is just a lot of little things.....i.e connectors, hoses, etc...that you need to disconnect.....

If you have to get it done by a shop I would suggest making sure they have done the 2jzgte swap into SC300

there are plenty of good shops in texas, keep searching. anyone who says the costliest part of an engine swap is modifications to the exhaust does not know what they are talking about. all the supra midpipes bolt right up to our catbacks. they have obviously not done a gte swap before in a SC. I wouldn't even give my car to a shop unless they have done that swap before, and even then you can get worked over by the time its done the first quote can seem like a mere down payment. DIY is always best on engine swaps, save money to get a harness professionally done, thats where its best used.

I'll keep searching. Just wanted to be sure that the 3k price tag was insane in the membrane.

edit: I almost want to call back and be like.."Hey guy, you and me both know you're over charging. Why do you just do it for 500 and we'll call it a day, eh?" lol I read the reviews of this place...not good. lol

I understand where you are coming from saying 3000 is high because it is. But you have to realize all the time spent changing seals, gaskets, wiring, fixing connectors, and all the other small things that come up. I forgot the site but there was one shop that had it all listed on their site and to do a gte swap with everything was 7K-10K but that included everything I believe.

Maybe they don't really want to do the swap so that's why you got the high price? I know I've done this before in work related estimates.

3k$ is a lots of cash for a swap, the hardest part is wiring, the rest is just unbolting, unplugging everything and the engine hoist. With a few smart brains and some tools you can do it under 500 . Wiring is the toughest part of swap!!!

BoostLogic in Austin has done the swap into SC's quite a few times. Check in with them and see how much they charge for the swap.

they will quote around 3k, if not more. watch lol

OP, you won't be swapping a GTE motor into your car for 3k.

you need to buy a lot of other accessories and maintenance items while you do the swap. it's going to cost more.

I've been quoted somewhere along the same figure at least once. I think the cheapest I've been quoted was around $1800-$2000 assuming you have EVERY single thing needed. And there is always something. It's just a lot of labor and time.

I never inquired with the most well known shops for the very reason that I know the price will be very high. Though out this way I'm going to at least get a quote from FSR.

No personal experience but I also think checking with BoostLogic is worth a shot. If you were in Florida I'd recommend Grip Industries or SpeedForSale in GA. Both way too far to be realistic for you, ashtray.
