SCBlackout gotta fix it before building it
Like most new users I came here and started searching for a solution. Most threads mentioned all the available options but did not go into the positives and negatives of each of the available lsd's on the market. When a stock auto tt torsen pumpkin came up for sale at a reasonable price I decided to jump on it. I had it professionally rebuilt with all new parts and installed onto the car. I was very happy with my purchase as they are so hard to find.
Then as the months went by I started to come across more and more threads talking about how the torsen is unsafe above 500hp. I found videos of cars pulling extremely hard to one side on gear changes, really sloppy in the corners, and overall really unhappy opinions of the torsen. I then spent months talking to people who actually track their cars and in the end I found the best choice for my goals was to find an os giken 1.5 way super lock. Well with retail around $1700, plus knowing it would be another few hundred in parts, this was going to be a hard pill to swallow. I put it on my long term wish list as I could not see spending that much when I had many other parts needed for the build.
Well as luck has it a unit came up for sale at a fantastic price so I jumped on it.
I will admit that this is almost an 'overkill' purchase for such a basic build and that the torsen would have done just fine. Even though spending the money on this will put the build back a month or two, I believe in the end it will become one of the best decisions I have made. I am not much of a driver but I did get a chance to drive an m3 with the os super lock and I have to admit there was a huge difference (I know an sc and m3 are apples and oranges). Whether real or imagined, I felt a lot more confidence both in and out of the corners and that can only be a good thing.
I had the torsen added to the stock 4.08 pumpkin as I was not yet na-t and wanted my speedometer to read correctly. Now the plan is to put the giken into the auto tt 3.76 pumpkin. Once the r154 is finished, I will pull the w58 and the torsen pumpkin and put them up for sale to help fund the engine maintenance.
I have a lot more to purchase so the build probably won't be starting until spring or early summer, but after almost 2 years so far, I figure another 6 months of saving for parts isn't going to bother me. Besides, it will probably take me that long just to figure out how far to take the engine maintenance/rebuild. It's hard to get Gerrb's voice out of my head saying I would be stupid not to put in a gte for the amount that I am spending on this. I'm just not sure I want to have to learn how to rewire the harness and not to mention the added months it would take to save up for a gte. I guess I will see what my patience and knowledge level is when I reach that point.
