I didn't realize until yesterday that you could paint over Gibbs Brand oil. I should have ordered a can of that to put on first as a metal treatment and second layer of rust protection.
you should have cleaned it with rubbing alcohol, that would have left the metal underneath as bare and unoxidized as possible, even paint thinner might work better than alcohol, too late now though, just gotta wait.

I cleaned it thoroughly with mineral spirits. The Gibbs Brand oil is a totally different thing, though. It provides lasting protection, rather than just a temporary cleaning. It's what the hot rodders swear by.

Well shoot, the brushed metal experiment may be short lived. Some rust blooms developed overnight. Oddly, they rub off the surface, rather than being under the clear coat, so either something got on the hood that rusted or, more likely, the clear didn't hold up to buffing in spots and the surface is the bare metal. At least the vent is working great.
