so i put the flasher in and it fried... took it out and opened it up and smoke came out of it... something shorted i guess. it still makes the clicking sound but the lights don't work at all now.

That's not good. It sounds like the flasher is still working though... so it's likely just the resistor that fried. It probably couldn't handle the load. Does Radioshack carry higher durability resistors?

A quick way to check if the flasher still works would be to install the metal shunt.

Yea I'll try that once I get home. The lights still work with the other flasher and no fuses blown.

3 pin flasher came in and it doesn't work at all. nothing going through. gonna solder the shunt back in, and look for some resistors online

That's good news.

It's a shame that these older models don't seem to work with a drop in flasher. It would make things much easier. Here is a link to a resistor made by the same company that I used, though it is at a higher resistance. This should work for your application here. If we knew the exact resistance to compensate for the incandescent to LED conversion you could use the exact resistance to maintain the bulb out functionality, but that would be a bit more work. That being said, I would go a little overboard on the resistance. The linked 5Ohm should work.

Good luck though, let me know if it eventually works out.

The one I linked is actually just a 5Ohm. It looks like they have a stock picture for most of the resistors.

i'm gonna try a 10 and 1 ohm for now. see which one works.

So I got the 10 ohm in there and it doesn't work, the flasher clicks but the lights don't come on. Gonna try the 1 ohm now

the 1 ohm works! i repeat the 1 ohm resistor works! the news needs to spread so that people don't have to put load resistors everywhere. still have to check if it will work once i install the front turn signal LEDs. that's the true test

Glad to hear it oldManTan. That makes us the first two cases that I've known of that have successfully converted over some 92-94 flashers. For reference, the current resistor I have in my flasher is only a 0.036Ohm and that works perfectly as well while maintaining bulb out hyperflash. This will vary depending on the LEDs used, but it shows that the actual resistance needed to convert a flasher is very low.

Yep, this is a really easy, cheap fix and thanks for sharing it.
