Broken Into!
absolutely, i have still not touched anytying, the only thing is. sicne the kid did my tune up 36 hours before the break in, if his fingerprints are on it, he could easily say "of course they are, i did a tune up on this car and pulled it into the garage."
you said a wire on the alarm was cut? If he brought his own wire cutters, the cops could match the cut marks on the wire to the cutting edges on the tool - tell the cops to get hold of his toolbox. Matching the cutters to the wire will take some lab work (photomicroscopy) and if the cops won't do it maybe your insurance company will - just a thought - even if he wore gloves, the tool could cook him if they find it in his possession -

Unfortunately, unless a murder had occurred- they're probably not going to go to such lengths. I'm not saying they are right... just preparing you for reality.

true. when my apt got broken into police came and took down the list of missing items and that was it. They may not do much other than to ask you if u have insurance and tell you to call them. It is hard to get them to take fingerprints also, so good luck.
the police came down today and spent about an hour here. fingerprinting, taking pictures, etc. everyone from the PD that i have worked with so far agrees that it was probably this mechanic kid. they already went to the mechanics and talked to the owner and manager as well, but have not told me if they came up with anything at all. in any event, hopefully things continue well. an interesting thing was they brought their own jack to use. also, the left side of my car was propped up with a donut that they brought as well.
I hope this works out for you , make sure you get fingerprints of the wheel lock, if you still have it if you dont, he prob has fingerprints on your garage opener.hopefullythe cops in your area are more diligent then the ones in NYC =)
I know these things because I'm a field investigator for an insurance company - I do boats, not cars...
It's true that if mayhem wasn't involved you won't get a lot of lab help, but it sounds like you are getting pretty good response from the gendarmes so far. Forensics labs run by police departments are buried with work, but the same work can be done by independent labs, but it's expensive. Your insurance claims adjuster will have to decide if it's worth the expense, which could approach the cost of repairing the car.
The dream result would be: The cops prove their case, the guy gets busted, goes to jail, the insurance company pays to fix your car, it gets fixed right, and you get your deductible back after your insurance company sues the perp and his employer (the shop hired the perp and provided the perp with the opportunity to rip you off, even if they did it unwittingly) - the perp won't have much in the way of assets the judge could take - except maybe his car - ah, that would be justice, eh?
Good luck - -
