I have encountered on many occasions that the search reveals several threads possible on the topic but it ends up with no answers to the problem the answer maybe in the thread but it was never closed out with the resolution.
+ 1 ... I believe this is the very reason why people make new threads .. they search and then find tons of thread without resolution or good answers so they make another thread asking same question.
I agree that threads especially those asking for answers and solutions should be finished. Better yet , marked as resolved if even possible and those threads comes out first on searches.
On build threads , that would be kinda hard to do. I see build threads that are evolving or owners continuing the upgrades even after 5 , 8 or more years just because we are never satisfied. We always want it better. So I doubt if build threads can be tagged as finished. And besides on build threads , in my opinion there is no right or wrong. People are just sharing what they are doing on their cars. It is the OP's car and money and none of our business what he does with his car or money. As long as he is happy and he doesn't transgress any forum policies then he should be fine.
This proposal of finishing the thread is a good idea from you guys !
i can't tell you how many times ive searched something to find out other people have the same issue but theres no resolution not only on this forum but other forums as well. i feel it would greatly benefit the community to have the completed threads marked with something. maybe something as little as the OP completing the thread and having a moderator change the title of the thread to indicate a complete thread with answers.
the only gripe i have with build threads is when someone starts a thread and updates it along the way so i have to read through 3973 posts of people going "wow nice build" before i can find the next update or set of pictures the builder posts.
So, if a thread is considered finished/complete will it become locked? I have been on other forums where threads are locked by the moderators so no new entries or bumps can occur to make them "current".
Occasionally, a real old thread is reactivated by a newbie for a specific issue bringing it to the "front page". While the Stickies and Search functions work well, these resurrected threads can be educational.
Trade offs for either approach. The idea of "completing" or closing a thread by the original poster is interesting.
what we need here is a section dedicated to problems that have been solved or DIY's that are informative, detailed and complete from beginning to end.
The way it is now is a complete mess of old threads mixed with unresolved ones and threads filled with people telling the guy to search.
how to give your car a tune up
how to change brake pads/rotors
Steering wheel tilt repair
How to roll fenders
how to install/remove body kit
how to remove/install/swap interior
how to remove/install fenders and body panels
etc..
These are all fairly straight forward things that all of us will need at one time or another, yet you have to dig through multiple useless threads to even find anything that's remotely relevant.
Make it simple, when someone created a worthy thread, add it into this section so people can very easily find it.
I dont think we are at liberty to close threads just because they arent finished. I think this will lead to no newbies joining based upon everyone telling them to use the search button above. I still like the idea of people bumping the old threads. This gives everyone a chance to view an old view and see if it applies to their question they are looking for. Most people will search the main search bar and the particular within the thread or section search.
The frequently asked thread has been designed also to help the newbies find the exact answer they are looking for. Even the moderators cant control all the threads and put them where we even see fit. There is more to a moderator than people know. Not just changing titles, but handling disputes, answering emails, changing names, etc. Nothing hard, but I do it, to lend a hand and cause I want to contribute back to the Lexus community. I try to answer everyones PM within 3 hours, but sometimes my schedule doenst allow it.
This thread was to remind everyone to TRY and FINISH THIER THREAD. I know that everyone might not check the internet for all options and answers, but I thought this would be a way to start the reminders!!!
Not a bad idea. The only problem is you'd have to go back and delete all the dead threads where an update/answer was never found. Searching leads to finding old threads where the op never got an answer and likely gave up/left and the thread died.
Yeah that's true, we're always telling people to search. How do we expect them to help themselves if the answer isn't there?
My point exactly. This is why I need you all's help in trying to resolve this, starting today. If everyone kept their thread up to date, it in turn would help the rest of us down the road. I cant tell you how many threads I have saved or links. I understand if you have a slow build or something comes up, thats understandable, but I think it is a bit more than that. I was hoping to get some great feedback on making this the Lexus "One Stop Shop" for answering all the questions that someone might come across.
I also received a PM stating that this thread might be a little rude or came across to some as being rude. If I offended anyone by this thread, and making you think you have to finish your thread, or we will close it, that is not correct. My apologies if I offended anyone.
This is an ongoing issue, I don't think closing threads is the way to go because it discourages people continuing the topic in the appropriate place, that's a fast track to get 20+ threads on the same topic.
lately myself and alot of members have been trying to help get the questions in the performance section resolved at a much higher rate than before, It is tough to search on certain topics and we must realize people will ask again if they have searched and cannot find it, and when that happens if we can get an answer in the new thread people won't have to go digging so far back where the information is harder to find.
Sometimes the threads with the simplest questions actually make the best threads for others to look back at later when searching, as long as there is a straight forward answer right there on the first few pages.

I also agree with not closing the threads. It will not solve anything in my book. They will just open a new thread asking the same question, but maybe in a different manner. I appreciate you and several others taking the time out to answer the needed answers in the performance section. I am not there in answering technical questions about some swaps and setups. Keep in mind, I do spend alot of time on here, but sometimes other things take priority.
Thanks to everyone who has commented on this thread and not allowing it to continue.
Thank you as well, I have seen you answer your fair share of questions, and there is enough stuff to keep up with to go around and I feel like we all have our areas of expertise where we can help out. Things definitely do take priority especially when it comes to real life stuff, but when we are here if we can keep the proper structure and attitude as a community we have enough manpower to get it all done.
I do like the idea of some way to encourage coming back and posting the answer to the problem or the results, it seems at that point many people just disappear into the sunset for various reasons.
maybe send an automated message to the OP of a thread 6 months or a year in and ask them if they are satisfied and would like to give feedback and update with results. I can see alot of people simply ignoring that though.

That's a fantastic idea man. I will need to talk to DaveGS4 to see if I can work on this. This may become a survey type environment on how the moderators answered the questions or about the thread in general.
The other thing about dead breads is sometimes current questions fall back a few pages unanswered then go Mia until it is necro bumped. An example: I posted a thread cause the whole vsv valve trick wasn't working. I eventually gave up on it due to no one answering whatever I asked. I forget what it was, but the solution ended up being bypassing it completely. I never updated the thread because I had forgotten about it until I saw it necro bumped way later.
I suspect the same happens to others questions, but they don't come back.
