cluster
The instrumental cluster went out on my manual '95 sc300. I am calling all the junk yards in houston area now trying to find a replacement, but nobody seems to know for sure whether it is the same cluster that the automatic sc300 or sc400 would have in them. I can't possibly imagine why they would not fit, but I wanted to be sure before I buy one. It is very hard to find a manual sc300 at a junk yards, but I found some sc400 and auto sc300. Has anyone done something like that before? Do you guys know for sure that it will fit? How hard is it to replace?
Call your local Toyota dealer, and ask them what they would charge. My local Toyota dealer quoted me $650. This includes the new cluster, needles, illumination bulbs, and labor. You can go round and round, and try all types of ways to sidestep the issue, but at the end of the day- $650 'aint all that bad (considering the alternatives). Sure, you may save a hundred bucks by buying something used, etc. but you have to hassle with it, and worry about it just going out on you again in a year or two. I've finally come to grips with the fact that this is the best way for me to get them fixed, so I'll be getting them done here shortly.
I called the dealer today and asked if the part number was the same for cluster for each year, auto and manual and sc300 and sc400. They said it was only the same for 95 and 96 sc300 manual, which is what I have('95). Does this mean that cluster from an auto would not fit. Why would it not?
Actually after Cross referanceing the dashes here are the Year Groups.
For Sc models, "92,93" "94""95,96""97,98"
useing clusters outside of your year grouping may work however there are some wireing differances ,and will have something that won't work properly.
This was to prevent theft since the parts are verry specific to each year group.
Also in the 92-94 the dashes read the speed sensor at 20 pulses per Revolution. 95 and up read at 4 pulses per second.
So the milage RPM And Speeds can widely change by useing dashes that arn't within a year of your vehicle
As for swaping out the dashes you can find information on how to do this at this site. It takes about 15min to do and is very simple.
