Default Question about rear differential

So, I've been hearing a loud clunking noise coming fron the rear of my 97'SC3. It started about a week ago and is progressively getting louder. I decided to stop by Firestone and have them look at it and they indicated that my passenger side axle isn't rotating and that I need a new differential. Can the differential be rebuilt or would it be cheaper to just purchase a used one?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I need this repaired immediately.

Thanks Guys

I would buy a used one so it's a quick fix and full replacement.

Could it not be just the U joints or a stuck parking brake?
