I picked up some good hp by leaning my fuel mixture out via afpr as well as some much needed mpg which is up around 26 now on the hwy.

thanks for the advice. The only mod I done besides HIDs is the BFI mod, which makes me smile from time to time. I guess I will be going F/I after all

I'm looking forward to installing my AEM FIC 8 to lean out my fuel mixture. I can't wait to get better fuel economy too. I'm going to tune for 94 octane gas. When I put in 94 octane you can literally smell the rich gas from the exhaust! I only need the 94 really for nitrous, but I'm sure it will yield a bit more power than 91 when tuned for N/A power.

Sad but true.
Go manual and you'll be happier.
I think that you can set up a lean map to pass emissions on a turbo 1uz. Then switch to rich/safe mode
MMCtuner, would you mind showing me some #'s proving that? I have seen threads backing up all my #'s. If you want, I will gladly drag them up to prove to you that there is truth in what I say.

Mayanator you mention 250whp with new intake manifold, headers, exhaust, bfi and tune. This is probably true with the VVTI 1UZ. The non-vvti 1uz would probably be 235whp at best, even with a manual trans. Not 280whp.

I guess with a nicely ported intake and exhaust outlet you could possibly hit 250whp with a non-vvti motor (without changing cams).

There's a nice thread on Lextreme discussing all this
http://www.lextreme.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12777

Maybe you're talking about the VVTI motor?

Just saying with a manual trans alone (in the thread referenced) 210whp has been seen. add the approx 18+ whp seen with headers and you are at about 230 whp. Yes, 280 whp may have been optimistic, but most of the claims I believe you are referencing (there was a long thread on lextreme, i think thats what you're talking about) are with a factory intake manifold which severly limits the potential power that can be made from the 1uz. at a airflow cap around 5400rpm there is only so much you can do raise the power. Rpms=horsepower, with a limit to where the power can be made, you limit the potential #'s. The other thing I saw in the thread where Itb's, which I think needs more cam to make power.

Sorry if you mislead me. I have no bad intentions but english is not my language and maybe that confused things a bit.
I told you that because I have an SC400 for 5 years now and I´ve searched lots of forums regarding power mods. I finally went turbo because there are no big power gains if not FI. Of course there are some nice n/a setups with plenty power out there, just not only with those simple mods.
If you can find an SC400 with only those mods that gives 280whp would be awesome and please share. Exhausts and headers/extractors claims are mostly from the people that makes them.
Back on topic: you should do the 4th solenoid mod on your trans/ecu. That one with the BFI are the best FREE mods that you can do and be happy with.

For the cost of a swap it would be much cheaper to get high horsepower out of a 1UZ.

You can get an ECU like a Unichip and advance timing and lean your A/F to gain about 20-30hp at the wheels. The car is tuned very conservatively from stock. Headers gain about 20hp at the wheels. ECU + Headers on 1UZ is known to gain 40hp at wheels.

The best bang for your buck is a centrifugal supercharger or nitrous.

Buy a used vortech or procharger for $800. Buy a lextreme supercharger bracket $300. For about $1500-$2000 you're going to have a nice supercharger setup.

A user KC95 on these forums got a 12 second flat 1/4 mile time with a simple setup such as this one. On a stock unopened block! There are people running 400hp-500hp on stock unopened 1UZ first gen motors.

Other than that the 1uz block can take a huge nitrous shot.

http://www.lextreme.com/supercharger-bracket.html

Edit: Oh I just re-read that you only want natural power. BFI, headers, exhaust, ECU tune, ported heads, cams, manual or shift kitted high stall auto. More extreme you can do 4.7L 2uz block swap with 1uz head. Why don't you like boost? Cheapest way to high horsepower is a vortech supercharger with fishbracket. You can even run it through stock maf and stock ecu. Centrifugals are good daily drivers too.
u really know your stuff clean , good to know

Personally id love a nice 300-350 ish hp 1uz, that would be more then enough for most of us I think
