might as well change the o2 sensors. make sure ECT is giving out correct voltage readings.

unplug the vacuum line that's going to the EGR. If the car smooths out, your EGR is stuck OPEN.

having a open EGR would cause the vehicle to not start or stall. EGR is only opened on cruising speeds.

Negative. The EGR Valve is open more than just cruise speeds, things like cold idle etc are all in the FSM.

Not unless you have an aftermarket ecu.

Your EGR actually cools the combustion temperatures down. The stock ECUs fuel maps compensate for this so when you delete it you'll be running at the wrong af/r

Can you elaborate how does EGR kills gas mileage? EGR is suppose to improve gas mileage. Or you are talking about EGR on at idle?

Not to thread jack, but is 13 MPG fulltime city driving normal? I got 221mi on fulltank last week. Nothing seems to be wrong with my '95 SC400, no CEL, but one thing I noticed is my exhaust smells a little rich. What should I do first or what should I be looking for first to troubleshoot this? I'm planning on just taking everything apart tomorrow, clean MAFs, clean EGR, change the hoses if needed, clean O2 sensors, inspect spark plugs and wires, inspect distributor... Anything else I'm missing? Thanks in advance.

If you're driving like a grandpa then NO, not normal for sure. Even for a normal driver, this is bad gas mileage. Unless you're just ripping it after each red light and stuff.

I used to get 17mpg full time city driving. Then about a month ago, I tried using the ECT/PWR full time city driving, then I get 13mpg for a couple of weeks with it turned on the whole time. Now, it's been a couple of weeks of me NOT using the ECT/PWR and I'm still getting 13mpg full time city driving. Yes, I drive like a granpa if you've seen my thread I said that. I don't even accelerate my SC hard or brake hard. The fuel filter haven't been changed either, and I'm pretty sure ever since the car was new, because there are no signs of the lines being touched by tools of any sort. It's next on my list probably in the next couple of months. Any ideas CL?

I deleted my EGR and it seems like my gas mileage stayed the same... nothing to write home about tho. still get about 280miles to the tank on my SC300. i believe i have bad 02sensors tho. I had a CEL and TC light on since i got it and i can reset the ECU and it stays off till engine warms up. so I am gonna change my fuel filter and 02 sensors in the near future and see if i get any better mileage.
