Help Tabaka - Code 52 - Knock Sensor 95 SC300 5spd
Did a bit of searching but we don't have a detailed DIY for a knock sensor. I was on my way to work this morning and happen to see my Check engine light on a few minutes before arriving to the office. I checked codes using the TE1 - E1 paperclip method and it's lucky number 52 .
Is it common for these to go bad?
How much are knock sensors?
Should I buy a new sensor or is used ok?
Is it an easy DIY on a 2JZGE, or should I just bring it to a shop? Anyone in NoVa want to give a hand?
This car is a daily, should I stop driving it and get a rental car (which will cost me $100+ per day) until it's fixed?
History
My car just hit 145k. In the past 15k, under the hood I've replaced...
Timing belt, waterpump, plugs, wires, distributor, MAF, battery, starter, clutch fan, radiator, serp belt, power steering pump, and flushed all fluids using Toyota branded products.
Looks like it just came off the showroom floor under the hood. I haven't noticed any weird sounds, noises, smells, etc.
Please chime in and help your friend Tabaka out

if i were you i would check my ecu before my knock sensors... not often do those things go bad and the ecu could be a fault. i was thorwing the same code and multiple others, brought it the the toyota dealer and they advised i get my ecu rebuilt, from than on no problems electrically in my car.

Not common on sc300 but very common on Older toyota's in General. The wires become very brittle and i replace knock sensors if i even work on something near it. Def. do both...cause you dont wanna have to go back in and do it again

I had that same code on my 1jzgte.. my knock sensor was loose. I pushed it back in, reset the CEL and Its been fine for the past month. Once that CEL comes on the car goes into like a "safe" mode and doesnt perform to its fullest... atleast that was the situation with mine. Glad you got yours fixed

I did the 12V mod and changed the fuel pump. This happened in February and it's almost July and never had an issue again... so I think I'm in the clear.
My only issue is that I'm going to swap engines soon and need to extend the harness of course. I'm told that you shouldn't splice the knock sensor wires as it will have negative effects. I believe there is a few threads about this but I need to dig deeper.
