I know tranny for the 95 is only interchangable with 95. 97+ has 5speed auto tranny and a lot of improvements in the design and bug fixes

95 could be a hassle if its not running perfect and your not into dumpin a lot of cash into cars, trust me. If u have the option to get 97+ in the same condition dont even think twice. You'd probably spend more than the price difference to make it run the same.

Only the 1998-2000 SC400 models had the 5-speed A650E.

The SC300 had the 4 speed A340E throughout its entire production run.

if you're on a budget, I wouldn't recommend any SC at the prices you are budgeted for. They WILL be a huge moneypit. Look at the stickies at what the common issues are with these cars, especially those that are beat and sold in the 2-4k range.

^^ This. Depending on what you're planning to ultimately do with the car (or rather, TO it) you will want to read as much as possible and look carefully at examples for sale. SC's are great cars and unique but do be prepared to spend a bit on one if it hasn't already been sorted out by the seller. Higher performance characteristics do not automatically come in a stock version but all 92-00 years are great platforms.

If you have come from an IS300 and are looking at V8 SC400's specifically I would recommend the 98-00 VVT-i model years unless you're looking for a chassis to modify for power. Then I'd say find an older one.

All of them, however, are going to be a bit expensive on the wallet.
