MK3 and early MK4 W58s sit in about the same position once bolted in. The 95+ MK4 W58 sits a little further back.

The MK3 being older will be cheapest. Check your local craigslist listings and junk yards.

I definitely agree with everyone's view that the 1UZFE can go well beyond 200k with proper service. I bought mine about a month ago with 250k and she runs very strong & smooth for a engine with such high mileage. I changed the oil over to Mobil 1 5w30 and she's not leaking any oil which is such a huge plus in my book! I also checked my oil level today and she's still at the full mark. My advice to you is to ensure that the Automatic tranny is in good shape and not leaking. Same goes for the Power Steering Pump. Mine is leaking and I do have a 1-2 late shift issue when cold, possibly due to a bad valve body. But I do intend to replace the tranny whenever possible. I also did replace Power Steering hoses since they were indeed leaking a little bit. But overall, I say you can't go wrong with it!

While you CAN use a MK3 W58, it will be require a lot of custom work. In the end, the cheaper price isn't worth the headache of trying to make it work.

So it has to be a 95+ w58?
What about the R154?

From what I've seen so far, the W58 has more aftermarket support for a SC400 Swap. I may be wrong about this, but I don't think anyone actually manufactures an adapter plate for the R154 Tranny. Quantum Auto sells a W58 Swap kit for the SC400.

However, if in the future you plan on making huge amounts of power, then I would definitely consider the R154 Tranny. It's far superior than the W58 in high power output applications. Just be ready to fabricate more custom parts, such as an adapter plate.

Check out this thread for more info regarding both swaps. (The thread is more for the SC300 Swap, but it gets you near the ballpark figure)

any sc300 w58 is the cheapest/easiest way to go.. the problem with the mk3 w58's is the shifter location.. a w58 from a sc300 puts it in the correct location.. or a w55 from an is300

There is a saying "1UZ is bullet proof" which is true.

If you use a MK3 W58, you would need a custom driveshaft, a possible shifter extension, custom cross-member/mount, and a mechanical to electronic speedometer conversion.

I'm unsure about the R154. You'd have to message some SC400 people here who have done the R154 conversion. You could also go on Lextreme and search.

Aluminum flywheel adapter kit.

Steel flywheel adapter kit.

A little research goes a long ways, guys.
