hey guys what do you think of this? and how would you do it?
in vain of the previous "double din" mount thread..
i saw this lastnight...
what do you guys think? this is from a shop called soundman.. that's in a toyota tacoma...
but to get real for one minute, you'd have:
GPS
web
movies
navigator
games
...and music
all in the ONE "unit"
...if you did this, that is...
plus being a slip in / slip out ipad... you have a "detachable face" which isn't common with modern double DIN touch units...
so - how would YOU do it???
my personal thoughts are, mounting wise:
it's hard to mount it neatly in a soarer / sc dash because of the positioning of the cruise control screen, plus the dash is relatively small in our cars... so it might look ridickerlous.
plus there's the logistics of the audio.. you can plug the audio into a processor / head unit obviously - but if you plug it in via ipad cable - but would that not limit the
...wait never mind it would be fine connected via USB
so anyway - what would YOU do to mount one of these / install / logistics one of these?

I dont know about that. There has been some custom built radio trim in the SC's before. Some of them are quite nice. It prolly can be done with the right tools and patience.

one dude in japan (i THINK it was japan) mounted his cruise screen into his centre console and had some nutso sized TV screen in it's place..
LeeSC300 - what makes you say that???
reason i like the iPad idea is because... to be honest i think that THIS interface:
looks much better than:
plus obvioulsy the ipad can be taken out so you don't get robbed
not to mention all the other cool crud that the ipad can do, like internet radio stations streaming via web connection while you drive...
..no more crummy commercial radio - just stream whole albums off pandora...
plus stream videos off youtube..
i think it's a great idea ...
initial startup woud be expensive to do...
but
it'd work out cheaper than buying:
double din receiver unit with decent touch screen
ipod (for music storage)
GPS receiver
satellite radio receiver
gaming machine (?)
etc etc

Haha thanks man
I think I just figured out how one could go about this without buying a data package just so u can use it for ur car, I just need to somehow get my hands on that samsung tablet without having to to buy a data package for it
Anyone have a hook up at venison? Haha

ive bee dabbling with this idea for a long time. when i do start digging into the audio of my car im most likely going to be fabbing up a tablet pc to fit. you can get a 7" android tablet for 200 or less. like you stated previously you have all the necessities..radio, gps, stream music, hook into your collection on home computer, movies, web, ultra lightweight os and interface, no boot times/clunkiness like with a car pc. if you have unlimited data with youre cell provider youre set with just tethering the unit to your phone.

For an ipad I would have this on an adapted moveable stand of some kind that could sit close to my hand on the armrest... and then moved out the way for more subtle use or for the passenger or whatever.
E.g. this bendy stand
I wouldn't want to lose my headunit as there would be times when I wouldn't want to take the ipad with me or carry when out of the car.

I'm still in two minds about doing this... Visually the samsung tab looks great and it's virtually double din sized..
Plus makes iPad sound pathetic by comparison
Lucky for us in aust the galaxy tab is 299$ outright as of today!
But yeah video and media and navi wise... This is a go go
But.. As far as audio output goes... I dunno..
I mean mp3 are always different volumes and bitrates etc so I might still just go the alpine double din for it's audio capabilities cos at end of day it's music I use mostly...
I'll probably still get tablet though cos after playing with one today I kind of realized I need one in my life
Only problem with giving me the power of the internet... Is I will get no work done at all. Ever.
