My dad put 87 octane in my car when I bought it when I was 15. It made all kinds of noises.

Six years later, it's only every had 93 octane since then. I don't even look at the regular grade prices at this point.

Hell, I even feel bad putting 87 in my girlfriend's Explorer.

I believe the thread addressed SC400 owners (1uz) not 2jz owners, so the timing belt may be easy for the 2jz, not so much for the 1uz. Yes, the jz platform is great for gobs of power, no argument there.

I just put in a tank of 87 today and after 60 miles I have noticed a audible knock or power loss however I will report after a few hundred miles and after I hook up the vi-pec knock amp on a hot day to see if indeed the engine is really knocking.

I know this thread is asking about a 400 but I'm going to pipe in anyway.
98 SC300 VVT-i. Says premium unleaded only. I used 89 oct for a long time, with no ill effects. I tried 87 oct for sh.ts and giggles.
No ill effects and no difference in my mileage. Still averaging mid to upper 20's mpg. If I run it till the light comes on, which I very rarely do, I'll get over 400 miles to a tank, even with regular unleaded.

Yep . Just think about it- you can shove heated compressed air at around 10 PSI on 91 octane with an na-t setup with no knock. Stands to reason then that for standard ATM pressure 91 is a little overkill

Do you have to put additives to get that octane level?
