That is a great question. My other option is for me to purchase a 300 in good running condition, spending a little more on the car itself and then purchasing the motor and giving it a thorough overhaul while its out and I am driving around. This will buy me time and take off a lot of stress as well as reduce the chances of any unexpected and inconvienient down time after the motor is in.

Define overhaul? I define overhauling as replacing the piston seals which would also require replacing every gasket and seal on the engine. Now this isn't necessarily a bad idea but it is a lot of work. The real question is it necessary? Considering more than a few members have over 200k engines on stock block I say no.

The oil pan gasket is the only other thing that can not be replaced with the engine still inside the vehicle.

If it was me I would first determine the condition of the engine you receive. Only after that can you decide what maintenance should be done.

My swap was flawless. Used mostly USDM parts and everything works like factory. Daily driven no problems at all. Did a 350 mile trip a few months ago. Still strong!

I define overhaul as replacing whatever is necessary to getting the motor in perfect working condition. I would like to avoid replacing pistons or tearing into the motor at all if possible. Just things like timing belt, water pump, rear main seal, etc etc...maybe headgasket but if I can avoid it I would like to.

I just spun a bearing in my 1Jz but my other 1J supra Motor is just fine and survived a track accident. Now i am swapping my 1J's and should have most of everything back in order before my next drift event. i am also adding a HX35 and Single setup so it should be fun and interesting

2jz swapped sc300 daily. Drives perfectly fine, but gotta fix ac and cruise control. I had very minor issues at the beginning, but its all fixed. I wouldnt think twice about reliabilty if i wanted to take it for a small trip. I have no regrets doing the swap as our cars need the extra power to get the thing moving. I also get about the same mpg as stock as long as i dont boost it too often.

True, people are running around with 200k miles, but there are also many people with engine problem before that, it's all about how you maintain the engine, I'll bet that people who are running high mileage engine are treating it properly too, the question is, when you buy an engine crated from Japan, do you know how it was treated?

Overhaul to me is taking things apart, replacing what NEEDS to be replaced. I'm doing that right now with my gte swap, it's going to take me a lot of time and money and it has already, but in the end, it's worth it for me knowing the engine is healthy and will go for another 300k under my watch.

I don't think I'd go swapped, but instead pull my current engine and completely rebuild it and go NA-T.

My only mistake was the cheap rebuilt driftmotion power steering pump x2...I found a used OEM PS pump and it has been good to go ever since.

I made this thread because it is very important to me that I don't have a tempermental car when I get back from Afghan. I will rely on it to get me to and from work and I will be driving it back and forth from TN to FL a few times a year at least.

I have to admit that after what I am hearing so far, I am kind of considering buying something else as a daily driver and building an SC300 on the side as I save the money for it.
I've had swapped cars that where dailys and ran like champs.. i've also had cars with stock engines that where very un-reliable..
