Paint thinner and Lacquer thinner are two different things, you would have to rub a lot more with paint thinner and that is why it probably started effecting your paint. Laquer thinner on the other hand takes off practically anything!!! Be careful with the stuff, because it WILL take the paint under the pinstripes off with it....
For those of you with the "stick-on" stripes, I removed them of a truck I had with "goof off" and a plastic putty knife. Let the stuff sit on there a couple of minutes, then start and edge with the plastic knife and peel it back is all, then go over it again to remove excess glue. It will not harm the paint.
