Gated shifter conversion shift problem
Just finished the gated shifter swap on my 97 sc300. Everything shifts fine from park all the way down to Low. Problem is coming up from neutral to park. The shifter gets stuck on neutral and i have to press the small black button on the shifter plate to go to park or reverse. I didnt hook up the vss speed sensor yet. Could that be the problem ?I tried hooking it up to the pink wire on the driver side kick panel with no luck. I will try the pink wire on the ecu.
Also the lights on the shifter plate dont light up. ANY CLUES?

Make sure before you remove the old shifter, it must be on Park. Install the gated and match it up. There you'll see if it needs to be cut or not. SC400 need to be cut an inch. You see what I'm saying?

I've had this issue as well. I followed jeslet's wonderful write up and have checked my wiring over and over. My only does it intermittently. When I try to show someone it works fine. I hope you guys figure it out, as I have yet to.

As for the light, you should use the ashtray wires.

I had the same problem where the shifter would lock going up from N to R. The VSS needs to be hooked up correctly and you should be able to shift when you step on the brake. It's to prevent an accidental shift into R while driving I'm assuming.
If you really can't figure it out and can't get it working, you can just bypass it and leave the VSS and the 12v disconnected. You'll be able to shift freely from N up to R without the shifter locking.

Thanks guys . I tried the skinny pink wire on the driver kick panel. I will mess with it on the weekend. It was 5 am when I was done putting everything back together. Will let you know what I find .

Its prefered to use the 4 speed SC400 shifter with the SC400, and the 3 speed SC300 shifter with the SC300. I know the linkage length is different for the later years, not sure on the 400. We need a more detailed wiring diagram for the conversion, too much guessing and extra work just to get it all working.

On another note, I got the shifter lights to work by connecting to ashtray.
