How hard was it to take the instrument cluster out?

 

Very easy, I figured it out fairly quickly. Palo Alto Speedometer wanted to charge me $75 for 1.5 hours worth of labor to remove it so I was like fvck that!...

First you tilt the steering wheel all the way down and outwards. Then you'll see two oblong shaped tabs on the top rim of the instrument cluster. Use a small flat head screw driver to pop those two tabs out. Underneath are two screws. Remove those. Then the black trim piece below the instrument cluster (with the light dimmer ****, odo reset, and time adjusting buttons) pops out. You need to force it out by prying your fingers underneath the edges and pulling fairly hard. It clips out. Now you've just exposed two more screws at the base of the instrument cluster. They are holding in two white brackets so it's easy to locate. Remove these two screws. You've removed a total of four screws now. Now grab the instrument cluster by the bottom and pull it out. It is held at the top by a one large clip. Once you've pulled it loose, there are three wiring harnesses to remove in the back of the cluster. It's impossible to do so with your bare hands. Use that same small flat head screwdriver to push in the clips that lock in the wiring harnesses and simutaneously pull the harness out. Some force is required. Now the instrument cluster is free. You have to wedge it out from between the visor and the steering wheel. Bingo, you're done. Now I'm off to go watch Star Wars, bye!

 

Hey Lex, what kind of bulbs are behind there and how many are there? I've noticed that the '97+ models have MUCH brighter ("HID" White" colored) bulbs...the '92's look "amber" in color...

Also, did you get any needles fixed? I'm trying to find an alternative to paying $500 or so for a new speedo cluster...

 

I think there are eight bulbs back there. I haven't got around to replacing them, nor did I take those pics for you . What's wrong with your needle anyway? Dead light?

My Speedo needle is "flickering"....right now, I'm trying to find out about doing a JDM digital dash swap...

 

Manaray, the Aussies at the Soarer Owners Club tell me the digital dash is full of problems and they're trying to get a hold of analog dashes. I think there is a compatibility issue with them too, but I'm not 100% on that.

 

Really? Hmmm...so I guess a replacement is the only way to go...

My "alternative" plan was to try the '97+ gauges...MUCH brighter than the '92...

 

I can't remember if it's '97 or '98 that they changed to the gated shifter??? Anyway, whichever year they did, that instrument cluster is also incompatible due to the change in gear displays. I'd love to have brighter gauges. I can't see crap when I'm driving on a bright, sunny day.

 

Is that lady next to your car real? Did she come with the car? What option was it? She's HOT

 

Photoshop baby! VQT, she looks even hotter up close!! I believe the option they offer is called the "playa package" SC400.

 

They changed over to the gated shifter in 1998....much better than the giant *****-matic shifter of previous years. The 1997 and up clusters also have a trip computer built in to the cluster. If the sun streams in my windows just right, I can't see crap either.....

Hmmm, I was doing some part lookups on the gauges and found some confusing *** info...

Who has a '93 SC? I need a comparison of the '93 to '92 gauges...for some reason, some sources list the '92 gauges as being different from the '93...but list the '93's the same up to '97...WTF?

To anyone with a '93-'96, are you gauge lights "yellowish"? The lights in the '97 gauges are very "white" (HID-ish)...my '92's lights are nearly amber!

 

Mine are yellowish, definately not white.
