took a test drive on a sc400 today, car needs some tlc - something i was expecting for the price of this car. but i found something really strange today from the carfax, i knew it was a salvage title but and was expecting something crash/flood related when i got the report. instead i found the opposite, i found an EML(exceeds mechanical limits). sometime between 109k and 110kmi and owners 4 and 5 was when the title was issued as an EML. now for those that dont know what an EML is carfax lables it as a 'title issued when the owner discloses an odometer rollover to a DMV. Rollovers occur on vehicles with 5-digit odometers that go from 99,999 to 00,000 miles.'
now, from EVERY sc series lexus ive been in(92,95,97) i have always seen a 6-digit digital odometer. so im flipping confused, how to a 6-digit car get a title for something that only 5-digit cars can get?! ive heard of some shady things going on but something like this is just weird....
so my question is, have ANY of you ever seen something like this happen to a 6-digit car? or is there something more to EML's?
Some states do it automatically when a car reaches certain milage, did owner 4 buy it with less than 100k and then at 109k sold it to owner 5??? if so they might have a 100k limit on the titles.
Here in south carolina its 200k, i had a previous SC with 240k on it and when i got the title they gave it an EML for being over 200k, no matter how i argued with them that it was original milage and the odometer could read 999,999 miles they told me that the states rule was any car over 200k got an EML on the title,
Go check with the DMV in the state that title was issued, it has NOTHING to do with what the car is capable of.
They may have changed the cluster out. If they registered it one year with 110k, changed the cluster, and sold it. New owner registers the car with new cluster showing 90k miles. I had an '84 picup like that and the title was listed as "Odometer Exempt". Don't know if that's the same thing with different terminology in another state.
