I am considering a 1jz swap in my 97 sc. When looking at motors on ebay and other places, some of them come with a 5 speed manual transmission attached. Would the tranny attached be a r154 because its a 1jz and if so are there different versions. I know the r154 is highly sought after and some times the prices of just the tranny on these boards are nearly as much as the motor/tranny/harness combos im finding. (2300ish... some times i see r154s here for nearly 2000). I want to convert my car to a 5 speed and I dont know if I should buy the motor and tranny seperate or if I would end up with same thing buying a combo. When I go 5 speed id rather not go with a w58 as they are not as good for high power.

 

If it is a 1jz, you can be 99% sure it is an r154. The thing you have to make sure is that it is from a soarer. The r154 can also come with the mk3 supra 1jz which is not what you want. Search.. I guarentee you will find something to help you.

 

I have looked but the truth is i'm not too smart when it comes with the mechanical stuff. What I got from what I searched was that the 1jz-gte motors that have a 5 speed are all 154s but depending on the car the shifter would have to be modified. I also heard that modifying the shifter was possible if it needed to be done. Other than that is there any other differences. I have done a lot of searching but find conflicting information.

 

Look for a soarer with an external shift linkage on the R154. That's the real money ticket. The earlier R154 had internal shift linkages like the early W58 trannies. the 95-97 SCs all had external shift linkages. However, driftmotion is offering a shift linkage modification where you can run the internal linkage R154.
