Default 273K Timing Belt post mortem......

Changed my Timing belt at 273K miles. Previously the belt, seals, and water pump were changed at 123K miles.

Upon disassembly, I examined the TB, water pump, and idler bearings.

The TB had no obvious signs of wear. There were no cracks or fishers of any sort.

The water pump bearing was still tight with 0 free play.

Both idler bearings, which are the orignal also had no free play at 273K miles.

In my opinion, all of these components would have gone another 150K miles.

Ah the beauty of Toyota. Quality.

People ask why I stick with the SC400, and tell me its old. The design and engineering in these cars are still rock solid. Sadly a lot of today's cars are cheap. I'd rather be in my 3500 lbs sled in an accident than not.

Simplicity seems to be key with Toyota. On the Nissan 300ZX, you have to follow a 30 step process for making sure you've gotten the tensioner adjusted just right. On the Toyota, you just install the tensioner and it is adjusted correctly.

On the Nissan, there are 3 separate accessory belts and each one must be adjusted and deflection checked. In addition, they must be re-adjusted after installing new ones after they stretch. Toyota? One belt only and an auto tensioner.

People claim that the TB on an SC400 is so difficult, but it's nothing compared to a 300ZX twin turbo.

300zx is a perfect example of a car that is built around the engine lol.
