Default question about the BFI

I've been reading up on the BFI and read all the threads I could find before I start messing with my car, but I don't really understand how the intake works. From what I understand, all you do is basically chop up the box and expose the air filter. How can this make such a difference if I keep all the stock piping? Is the box really that restrictive?

your gonna have to remove the skinny tube that goes from ur air box to the lower part of ur front bumper. thus giving it more air. while ur at it head down to auto zone and pick up a k&n drop in air filter

There is a little more to a BFI.

Tons of posts on here talk about it, but a few BFI posts show and describe how plastic is made to effectively "ram" from different parts of the front bumper.

Some on here have done it this way and posted their own DIY I believe:

http://www.planetsoarer.com/BFI3/bfi3.htm

That page also has links to other BFI projects you may want to check.

Others on CL have "rammed" the air from under the headlight.

Opening the box and taking the snorkel away may make more noise, but can not see it doing much good since it eliminates the old "cold" air snorkel and sucks air from the engine compartment. However, opening the box and directing cold or even "ramming" cold air seems like it would be an upgrade.

Good Luck.

Regards,

Tim
