Thought I would make an update.
Today is a little over a year since I completed this out-of-boredom modification.
It is still holding up just as well without any flaws.
Every car-oriented dude I know has chuckled and said how cool the upgrade is.
So, now I have four cup holders.
I also did this to my Volvo using the same process.
I saw this was added to the DIY...so whoever did that--thanks!

Well, total in my car is up to four cup holders.
The one that came in the center console closest to the arm rest had a lid on it. It bugged me but never latched right, so I shaved it down and used finishing putty to fill in holes, and then painted it black.
It looks stock.
My next cup holder idea is to create one that fits between the back of the center console and the back seat.
