AC Manifold Gauge questions

AC Manifold Gauge questions
when it rains it pours, have 2 cars with AC issues right now so I get to learn AC...
Looking into buying a AC manifold gauge to help troubleshoot the AC system but I can't find any info on what the difference is between gauges that do r12 (one car) and r134a (the other) - pressures should be about the same, so is it the fittings for the hoses? Scale on the gauges?
would a gauge for HVAC be the same gauge for automotive use? and what's the difference between brass and aluminum bodies on the gauge sets?
