****Official Wheel & Tire Fitment Guide for SC300/SC400****

Maximum Rim/Aspect Ratio without mods
Hello,
Proud new member. I just bought a '99 SC400 (Black/Tan) one owner with 88K miles. I was thrilled to find it. It replaces my '99 SC400 that was just totalled when a woman pulled out right in front of me and I had nowhere to go.
Anyway, on the last SC I had 18 inch rims with the low profile 40s... loved the look but the ride was pretty harsh and I bent a couple of rims on some bad potholes... I replaced those with 17s and the ride was a bit better, but I wasn't as happy.
Looking to do the 18s again, but my question is, how much room do I have to maybe use 45s or even 50s to make the ride a bit less harsh? I know my speedometer/odometer will be off, but my main concern is clearance in the wheel well and/or struts...
Bottom line, how high of an aspect ratio (45/50/55) can I go with 18 inch rims on a stock SC400? Many thanks.

^^^ first off, welcome and to answer your question the bigger the tire profile, the more your speedometer will be off. IMO, depending on the wheel width, I'd stick with 225/45R18, 235/45R18, 245/45R18, 255/40R18 and so on. If you haven't already, use a tire calculator to help size your tires accordingly. The one I usually use is: http://www.rimsntires.com/specs.jsp

I have been bouncing back and forth between 18s and 19s and now want to go with an 18x8 +40 wheel. Plan to use tire size of 245x40x18. Considered a 45 for a better ride but the 40 is closer to the 215/60/15 OEM size.
Stock suspension now and would likely lower it a bit to close the gap. Still want to avoid any roll or pulls. Thanks for any opinions and advice.

Duck, IMO, the 40 series profile tire would not only look better, it may also give you a performance edge i.e. less side wall flex in spirited driving. The 45 series would provide a little more cushion (absorbing bumps in the road) and comfort especially riding with a couple passengers. Your speed reading would also be 6% off.

Thanks!!! I had calculated the impact of using 45 on the speedometer too so nice to have that confirmed.
If I do lower the car a bit will the wiring harness in the driver side wheel well come into play? I found and read through the DIY thread and it appears it is worth doing that to eliminate issues.
Wheel choice right now is the Ace Alloy "Trend" in chrome. Not the most expensive but reviews are decent. I saw a picture of some discontinued Falken wheels (koblenz?) that look good, too. Just so many options (and just so little money....).

You can use them as is. They'll just look really sunk (I've had some before). The spacers would make it look better
