I have a 1999 SC400. I love it! It's my second one. My first one was a 1993. This one runs great. It has had a small "woooommmm woooommm" sound since I bought it last summer and only occurs around 65 mph. My tranny started acting up and I stopped driving it until I could get it rebuilt which was done superbly by ATROM (Automatic Transmission Rebuilders of Memphis). When I picked it up I noticed a new vibration... even at idle. The tranny guy said it was my center u-joint. The owner of the tranny shop, Mr. Howard, said he thought it was an engine mount. My wife said it has been doing that some but seems to be worse than before. It's her primary vehicle so I never noticed it before. Anyway, I took it to an import shop and they said my flex plate needed replaced. Well, that's too close to the transmission for me to pay someone else to tell my my tranny guy didn't do something right so I took it back to ATROM where they pulled the tranny, checked it out, installed a new torque converter (just in case it was bad), installed a new flex plate (to see if the other mechanic was right) and found out nothing helped. This was all done as a courtesy of Mr. James Howard (owner of ATROM). He only charged me for the flex plate. Mr. Howard called me this week to say he spoke to another customer of his who said he had an SC400 with the same problem and it was the motor mounts. He also told Mr. Howard the SC400's have SIX motor mounts! We checked it out as best as we could and can only find there are 2 in the front and one in the rear. The Lexus of Memphis dealership wants to charge $900 to replace them!
My question is this? How many are there on my car?
and... What would be a fair price to change them?
Ps I've found the front ones online for around $80 each.
"The tranny mount was holding the key though. I'd wager anyone wanting to eliminate cabin noise and vibration could skip the engine mounts and just do the tranny and have an amazing difference.
It did not matter whether I was sitting still or moving, I had engine noise. I can not even HEAR my engine running now."

Fastdave,
I am located here in Memphis, TN as well. I have all my tranny work done on my turbo foxbody by ATROM. James is a great person to deal with. He backs up his work and has been in business for quite awhile. If you are looking around for other shops to service your car, I have a couple that I personally use for my Lexus, Caddy SRX, BMW, etc..., that I have had success with. Email or PM me if interested. As far as buying parts, I highly recommend using ALIGA who is a member here on this forum.
Thanks for all your help! It has made all the difference. Mr. Howard at ATROM called me today. He replaced the motor mounts and transmission mount (even though they all looked "OK") and that was all it took! He said there is absolutely ZERO vibration!!!! My wife is SOOOOO excited!!!!
Thanks again, Dave
