I'm constantly surprised at the stupidity of parents today, letting their kids buy these things.
Its not like its a Supra or anything... a stock FWD DSM turbo will run 15s... quick car, it handles good, and its fun to drive, etc...

my first car was a LeMans, then I got a 85 300zx... i wish i had gotten a turbo DSM first... the cars are slow unless you wanna go fast (unlike the REALLY fast turbo cars like a 300zxTT, SupraTT, SC300T, etc )... those cars are quick enough to where you can be doing 80mph and not even know it lol

but i agree, i don't understand why parents go out and buy a Mustang GT or Cobra or Lightning for a kid's first car when they can't drive for ****

Hey man, you might wan to consider one of these cars. A Mazda RX-7, a Nissan 300ZX, or a Toyota Supra. Now I'm not refering to a late model, I mean the older ones. All are great cars that are reliable in terms of a sports car. They handle awsome; like a sports car should. There are TONS of performance parts out there to beef it up, as well as most shops know how to work on them. The cars are low cost, especially at auction. You enjoy the car for awhile, drive it like mad, look cool in front of all your friends, etc, etc. Then, as you get the money by busting you *** at a part time job, you add the intake, exhaust, etc. Do it slowly, and you can enjoy your youth, affort to take the ladies out, and have money left over to pay your gas bill at the end of the month, or help pay for your overpriced car insurance.

Always remember you will wrap your 1st car around either

a. A light pole
b. A parked car that suddenly moved in front of you
c. A ditch
d. or finally, the car in front of you, since he decided not to run that red light

All joking asside, keep in mind your insurance is sky high. Gas is not cheap, and repairs are unexpected and expensive. Getting loans are not easy. Buy within you budget, and more often than not, you will be involved in an accident very soon so buy a car with that in mind.

Keep street racing to a minimum - thats what tracks are for. Remember there are more people on that road than just you two.
Drive responsively. And it is never cool to drink and drive.

Be safe,
Keith

I'll take C. ditch.

Thats the first then I hit. Racing on a gravel road did not hurt much except for the one side suspension on the car. Few jy parts later good as new.

thx guys. Most of you talked about modding my first car. I dunno if I wanna do that. When I get the car hopefully the nxt monday's auction, im gonna save my leftovers. When I get 8k, im putting a down payment on a house, and renting it out as 2 apartents which its made to accomendate. The house will payyy off my loan, with $350 left over in cash for me each month. I will THEN save every penny, for about a year, and then when I feel resposnible, Ill get something with the money I have. Who knows, maybe a 1996 sc4? Ill see. But im definately not spending money on a mazda or anything like that, remember, my dream car is a lexus. I dont wanna slow down.

Hey man, those RX's, ZX's, and supras could run circles around a stock Lexus if done right. You wouldn't be slowing down, you'd be speeding up, but losing the classiness. My 85 Rx-7 runs a 12 sec qtr mile. Much faster than my low 15 sec. SC. And for the price of an aftermarket Lexus exhaust, I could buy another Rx and for the price of a powersteering pump replacement or A/C repair, I can build that engine for low 13's. Then I wouldn't mind when I slide around a corner too fast and hit the curb at 40 mph; totaling the car.

Just a thought.

Yeah, but a 12 second RX-7 engine lasts about a week, maybe less in the hands of a 16yr old

I got the car in 1988 -with bolt-on's, ran low 14's. Rebuilt the engine in 94 for the sole purpose of performance, and it ran a 12.86. It was used as a daily driver untill 98'. Now the car is run hard; I mean very hard for racing events, and has never given me a hint of trouble. The one good thing about a properly built rotary, is that they take some serious abuse and are extreemely reliable.

I think your thinking of Bridge ported engines when you say they last a week. They are usually done by some guy that doesn't speak english and has no clue what a micrometer is.

No, I'm thinking of hopped up rotaries in general... They have very little tolerance for detonation or abuse.

If you've put 4 years on it as a daily driver, you've obviously babied it and never overboosted. Either that or you're just plain lucky or REALLY know what you're doing.

I'd like to see what the average mileage is before they are rebuilt. No body buys RX-7s for reliability, they're near the bottom of the heap.

A friend of mine did a single Greddy T-78 conversion on a 94 Rex. He's not the most careful, but he boasts about being able to replace the engine cheaply. The last time was only $2500.

He asked me about how much to replace the 2JZ in my car... My answer... I have no idea.

Here's an idea... Go to racing school like I did, and learn how to take your car to it's limits. Then you can get injured as your idiot friend crashes his car with you in the passenger seat, like me!
Seriously, highway safety and racing school classes are worth the money. I learned a lot about controlling my car there and I haven't crashed since, knock on wood. I took that class after spinning my old car in the rain, and I've driven about 55000 miles since then.

Look for Skip Barber or Russell Racing those are most common.

Those performance oriented schools (like Skip Barber) are DEFINITELY worth the money! I just wish they made every new driver take them. I think they teach so much more than they do in ordinary high school classes.

You get a little physics lesson, you get to feel what its actually like to skid the car, not just based on what they tell you. I like that "skid car" simulator. They put an ordinary vehicle on casters to teach oversteer/understeer. Another strong recommendation is to get out on a snowy open parking lot and practice controlled drifting, braking, turning, etc. You can really tell alot about vehicle dynamics this way.
