I'm curious why this thread died out about 20 years ago, as it still rates highly on Google searches when I'm looking for collective wisdom on the topic.

As an avid weight weenie and currently working on my own 1992 SC400 to achieve performance based intelligent weight reduction, it makes me laugh to see a few people in the past repeatedly refer to 'sub 3000 pound' SCs. If we are being honest with ourselves, that is a completely unrealistic goal unless you are hell bent on removing everything from the car or have a virtually unlimited budget to spend rebuilding the car with exotic materials (think Bando's world famous time attack SC300 for reference there). What I mean is that it's highly unlikely you will ever see a sub 3000 pound SC that is properly streetable, and I think most of the race-only SCs are still above 3000 pounds. I would suggest that around 3200 pounds is a more realistic limit, but still entails a lot of work and some compromises being made.

I'm not saying any of this to be a downer by the way, only that removing 500+ pounds from the Lexus SC chassis is extremely difficult to do. My last official weigh-in was 3460 pounds with a full tank AFTER a bunch of weight reduction, and I always quantify everything. I also always weigh-in with a full tank of fuel, but that is simply because I prize consistency across different visits to the scale. You can always extrapolate a low fuel weight since we know that capacity of the fuel tank and also how much gas weighs per gallon.

If you want to further inspire weight reduction, please continue to contribute to this thread, as guys like me are always paying attention to these things.

Here is my own build thread for reference too, as weight reduction is always on my mind as I modify my own SC.

All my best to the true weight weenies out there...we are a special kind of enthusiast, and always hard to please!

This thread was going at the same time and remained much more active:

It's difficult but not impossible. I had my M/T SC300 right around that 3000 lb mark, with no exotic materials and not really spending anything on it. But, the interior was about as stripped as it gets, and I removed the sunroof. It was light enough that I had to modify the power assist level to not feel like it was floating over the road.
