rear main seal

I just turned over 190,000 miles on my sc300 auto trans. Several weeks ago I started to notice that I am leaking oil from my rear main engine seal. I have heard that I can get a much better price on this repair from a tranny shop rather than from a regular mechanic shop or dealer. Anyone gone this route? While I am replaceing this rear seal any other things I should check/replace?

i wouldnt go to a private shop, unless u personally know the tech. if you dont then go to the dealer, they will guarrentee the work plus the techs work on L's all day long. it might cost more, but who cares at least u're sure it will be done right

I don't agree with this logic. A knowledgable mechanic is a knowlegable mechanic, doesn't matter who hires him. I stay away from the dealer simply because of their ridiculously over-inflated prices. The same quality of work can be performed by a number of different shops. I know here in LA there's a number of shops that work on Lexus's, most of these shops are run by former Lexus tech's. They offer the same quality of work at a much more reasonable price. The dealer is not the end all and be all of quality repair jobs. And all shops should warranty/guarantee their work

I agree with mikeloc24. This sort of repair is not rocket science. Any decent shop should be able to handle this. Its is an unbolt and bolt job. Just had heard that since tranny shops take out and put in trannies all day that I could get a realistic labor rate on this repair instead of an over inflated "book" rate from a dealer or a mechanics shop. Just checking if any one has gone this route on a SC 300 with an auto tranny. I think I will check with a couple of trannie shops in my area and get a quote. I'll let you know what they say.

Please let us know as my rear main seal is leaking as well, but there's no way I'm letting the dealer fix it. I'll buy another car before I allow myself to get reamed by the dealer (again)...
