Default What is a flex plate?

Guys,

A friend has mentioned this several times in reference to my engine. What exactly is it? I thought it came on manual transmissions??

Peace,
Jonny

The flex plate is the part on an automatic transmission car that makes the connection between the end of the crankshaft to the torque converter. It also has the gear teeth that engage with the starter. Manual transmission cars have a flywheel instead.

Yes, that's it. The picture is a little dark in that area, but I can make out the holes in the flex plate. I can't see the starter gear teeth around the edge of the plate, but that's one sure way to identify it. On the motor in the right side of the picture, the flex plate would be immediately behind the torque converter.
